국문 초록

이 글은 김내성의 􋺷마인(魔人)􋺸이 보여주려 한 한국형 탐정소설이란 근대적 욕망과 ‘예(禮)’를 강조하던 당대의 대중적 감수성을 기반으로 한 탐정서사라는 점을 밝히는 것이 목적이다. 마인 은 1930년대 경성을 배경으로 하여, 근대 도시 경성 에서 일어나는 잔혹한 범죄의 동기를 추적하는 동시에 아이러니하게도 배경인 ‘근대’ ‘도시’ 경성의 이면에 숨어 있는 식민지 조선의 현실을 보여준다. 또한 이 소설은 과학적이고 분석적인 탐정이 사건을 파헤치는 것이 목적이 아니라, 피해자인 동시에 가해자인 은몽이 왜 이러한 범죄를 계획할 수밖에 없었는가에 초점을 맞추고 이를 위해 탐정 서사를 이끌어 나가는 데 대중적 감수성을 적극적으로 활용한다. 여기에는 근대의 두 가지 가장 큰 욕망 즉 재물에 대한 욕망과 애정에 대한 욕망이 주가 된다. 즉 ‘사랑이냐 돈이냐’로 말할 수 있는 ‘장한몽’ 식 삼각관계를 적극적으로 활용하여 범죄의 동기에게서 멀어지게 만들고, 가족에 대한 조선의 관습적인 관념이나 유산과 관계된 물질적 욕망, 탐욕 등이 근대적 범죄의 동기가 된 다는 것을 보여준다. 그리고 근대 체계가 작동하고 있지만 그 이면에는 여전히 가장 조선적인 가족에 대한 관념이라 할 수 있는 ‘예’가 강한 힘을 발휘한다는 것을 보여준다. 근대적 욕망과 사적 복수라는 이질적인 것이 공존하는 지점이 바로 주 은몽의 범죄이고, 마인 은 이러한 대중적 감수성을 통해 한국적 탐정소설을 시도하려 했다고 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to reveal that the Korean detective novel that Kim Nae-sung tried to show. The detective story The Evil(魔人) is based on the popular sensibility of those days which is emphasized modern desire and ‘politeness(禮)’. This novel is set in the 1930s’ Gyeongseong and it traces the motives for the brutal crimes that take place in the modern city of Gyeongseong, while ironically showing the reality of colonial Joseon hiding behind its background, ‘the modern’ ‘city’ of Gyeongseong. The novel also focuses on why Eun-mong, the victim and perpetrator, was forced to plan such a crime, not on the purpose of scientific and analytical detectives digging into the case, and actively uses public sensitivity to lead detective stories to do this. There are the two greatest desires of modern times: desire for wealth and desire for love. In other words, it actively use the love triangle of “Janghanmong”, which can be called “love or money,” to distance itself from the motive of crime. And the customary thought of family, the material desire associated with heritage and greed shows that it is the motive of modern crime. Among these things, most powerful thing is the politeness following old-Joseon’s common law. After all, it is the crime of Ju Eun-mong that the disparate of modern desire and personal revenge coexist. The Evil tried to show a Korean detective story through this public sensibility.
