최남선 『해에게서 소년에게』 재론

한국 근대시사에서 늘 첫머리에 놓여왔던 최남선 문학, 특히 해에게서 소년에게 에 대해서 기존 연구들은 최남선을 ‘계몽주의자’로 환원하거나 시의 형식적 측면에만 주목하여, 이 시가 지닌 타이포그래피적 측면, 화자의 특수한 성격, 상상력 등의 측면을 경시하였다. 지금까지 최남선 문학에 대한 많은 논의가 있어왔지만, 문학의 본질적 측면이라 할 수 있는 ‘문학성’의 측면에서는 시의 형식을 제외하고는 논의되지 못한 것이 사실이다. 이 글은 그러한 기존 연구에서 벗어나서 최남선 문학의 문학성의 실체에 접근하기 위해 해에게서 소년에게 를 대상으로 그 ‘시적인 특성’을 조명하였다. 이를 위해 두가지 측면에서 해에게서 소년에게 를 분석하였다. 첫째 그 시가 타이포그래피의 시각에서 바다 이미지를 보여준다는 것을 보였다. 또 모든 연의 시작과 끝으로 중간 내용을 감싸고 있는 파도소리를 바다의 목소리로 번역해 소 개하는 ‘사람-화자’로 설정한 것의 의미를 설명하였다. 둘째, 바다가 다른 어른들과 세상을 미워하는 것에 반해 소년들만을 좋아하는 것을, 당시 그리고 현재에도 일반적으로 받아들여지고 있는 뛰노는 소년들과 평온한 바다의 이미지를 시적 상 상력으로 바다를 의인화하여 바다가 소년을 좋아하는 것으로 설정하게 된 것으로 보았다. 이는 결국 ‘소년’과 ‘바다’의 관계를 평화로운 것으로 설정하여, 􋺷소년􋺸지의 독자들인 소년들에게 바다로, 즉 세계로 모험을 떠나라고 권유하는 의미라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Literature of Ch’oe Namsŏn, especially, “From the Sea to the Boy” has always been at the beginning of Korean modern literary history. But previous research on his poetry only focused on the formative aspect of poetry. They neglected his poetry’s special characteristics of the narrator and poetry’s imagination. So far, there have been many discussions about the literature of Ch oe Namsŏn, but it is true that in terms of literary value’ which is the essential aspect of literature, it was not discussed except the form of poetry. This article deviates from the existing research and illuminates the “poetic characteristic” of “From the Sea to the Boy” in order to approach the reality of the literature of the Ch’oe Namsŏn’s literature. To this end, this paper analyzed “From the Sea to the Boy” in two aspects. First, the poem showed sea images from the perspective of typography. In addition, I explained the meaning of setting a ‘person-speaker’ to translate the sounds of the waves into the voices of the sea. Second, the poetry converted the image of the boys and the calm sea which are generally accepted at that time and nowadays, to humanizing the sea by poetic imagination. The relationship between ‘boy’ and ‘sea’ is set to be peaceful, and it suggests to invite boys to take their adventure to the sea, which meant the outside world.
