국문 초록

본 연구는 섬유라는 매체가 지닌 물성을 통해 예술가들이 추구하는 관념은 무엇인지 섬유의 물성을 매체로 삶의 부조리와 모순된 상황을 작품으로 승화했던 에바 헤세를 통해 살펴보고자 했다. 현대에 이르러 예술의 각 분야는 장르들 간의 경계를 허물면서 기존의 매체들과 다양하게 접목하여 예술의 표현 범위를 확장하는 시도를 하고 있다. 과거에 섬유는 단순히 천이나 옷을 만드는 재료였으나 현재에는 그 한계를 넘어 다양한 주제를 표현하는 소재로 쓰이고 있다. 이것은 섬유가 지닌 본연의 부드러운 물성을 통해 발현되는 가변적 특성으로 인해 유기적 형태의 제작이 용이하며 복잡한 내면의 감정을 표출하기에 효과적이기 때문이다. 따라서 많은 작가들이 섬유를 작품의 주재료로 선택하여 인간의 감수성 및 내면의 본질 등 무형의 관념에 대한 표현을 극대화하고 있다. 섬유를 다룬 많은 작가들 중에서도 헤세는 섬유의 본연의 물성을 매체로 존재와 비존재, 삶과 죽음, 전체와 부분, 형상과 기하학 등 시작과 끝의 경계가 명확하지 않은 모순되고 대립된 개념을 동일 선상에 노출하여 대상이 지닌 양가성(Ambivalence)을 작품에 표출하고 있다. 특히 헤세의 작업은 부드러운 물성을 지닌 재료의 활용을 통해 극대화 되는데, 본 연구는 재료의 물성을 통해 그녀가 추구한 관념은 무엇인지 연구함으로써 표현 매체로의 물성의 활용에 대해 고찰해 보았다.

영문 초록

This study examined what is the idea pursued by artists, through the physical properties of fiber as a medium, and through Eva Hesse, which sublimated the contradictory situation of life into works. In the present, each field of art has attempted to expand the range of expression of art by variously combining with existing media while breaking the boundaries between genres. In the past, fiber was simply a material for cloth or clothes, but now it is used as a material for various topics and expressions beyond that. This is because it is easy to fabricate an organic form due to the variable characteristics expressed through the inherent soft physical properties of fiber and is effective in expressing complex inner feelings. Therefore, many artists have chosen textile as the main material of the work, maximizing the expressions of intangible ideas such as human sensibility and inner essence. Among many artists who works with fiber, Eva Hesse exposes the contradictory notions of contradictory and contradictory concepts of existence and non-existence, life and death, whole and partial, shape and geometry, the beginning and the end, I expressed it to the work. In particular, Hesse s work is maximized through the use of materials with soft physical properties. By studying the ideas she pursued through the physical properties of materials, The use of physical properties as a medium of expression is examined.
