복제기술을 활용한 문화재의 원형복원

국문 초록

문화재는 보존환경에 따라 상당한 차이가 있지만 오랜 세월을 거치면서 부식, 열화, 파손을 겪은 경우가 대부분이다. 문화재는 최적의 보존환경을 구축하여 현재의 상태를 유지하는 것이 최선이지만 그것도 쉬운 일은 아니다. 근래 손상된 문화재를 보존처리한 다음 그것을 전시에 활용하는 과정에서 원형복원작업을 진행하는 경우가 종종 있다. 그 과정에서 다양한 방법이 활용되고 있으며, 유물에 손상을 주지 않고 원형을 복원하고자 하는 노력이 지속되고 있다. 유물복제란 유물과 동일한 외형 및 색조를 재현해내는 일이며 유물의 안전한 보존관리와 전시 기법의 다양성을 시도할 수 있는 문화재 보존방법 가운데 하나이다. 손상된 유물은 특수공간에 보존관리하고 그와 유사도가 높은 복제품을 제작하여 전시하는 것은 전시관 운영에 큰 도움을 준다. 아울러 복제기술은 손상된 유물을 복원하는 경우에도 필요하며 보존처리 후 유물의 외형적 완성도를 높이고자 할 경우에도 활용될 수 있다. 유물복제는 유물의 원 소재와 동일한 재료로 제작하는 방법과 수지를 이용하여 제작하는 방법이 있다. 제작과정은 접촉식복제와 비접촉식복제로 분류해볼 수 있다. 대상유물의 보존과 관련하여 비접촉식 복제방법을 권장할 수 있지만, 경우에 따라서 접촉식방법으로 형틀을 제작하여 복제하는 것이 합리적일 때가 많다. 필자는 다년간의 연구를 토대로 복제기술을 적용하여 문화재의 원형복원작업을 진행한 바 있다. 그 과정에서 겪은 다양한 시행착오를 복기하며 향후 문화재 원형복원 작업의 전제와 전망에 대해 살펴보았다. 특히 자연과학적인 분석 데이터, 정밀3D스캔과 3D프린팅 활용, 문화재에 구현된 기술 복원 및 적용 노력이 필요함을 아울러 제언하였다. 즉, ‘형태와 기술’ 두 가지를 함께 복원하려는 방향이 바람직하며 그 결과물을 전시와 연구에 활용할 필요가 있음을 강조하였다.

영문 초록

Most of cultural properties often have subjected to corrosion, deterioration and damage over a long time, though there are substantial differences depending on conservative environment. It is most desirable to conserve cultural properties as they are by establishing an optimal conservation environment, but it is not easy. Recently it is often carried out the restoration of the damaged cultural properties that after undergoing conservation treatment of them, as they are used in exhibitions. In the process, a variety of methods are tried and there are continuous efforts to restore the archetypes without damaging any relics. The replica of relics is reproducing original appearance and tones of the relics. It is one of methods to conserve cultural properties for the safe conservation management of relics. And it is able to try various exhibition techniques. If relics are damaged, a method which is very useful for the management of exhibition halls is to conserve and manage them in a special space, while manufacturing and exhibiting replicas with high similarity with original ones. Moreover, replica techniques are necessary not only for restoring damaged relics, but also for enhancing appearance completion of them after conservation treatment. The replica of relics is conducted by using the same materials as those found from original ones or resin. The replica can be divided into contact and contactless one. Although contactless replica may be sometimes recommended for conserving relics, it is often more reasonable to use contact replica by manufacturing templates. The author has implemented restoration processes of cultural properties by using replica techniques for ten years. This study examined the premise and the prospect of the future restoration of cultural properties, by reflecting various trials and errors occurring in the process. In particular, it suggests that it is necessary to make efforts to use precise 3D scanners and 3D printing and restore and apply technologies embodied in cultural properties. Thus, it stresses that it is desirable to restore both ‘forms and technologies’ and it is also necessary to use the outcomes in exhibitions and researches.
