주디 폭스(Judy Fox)의 작품에 관한 연구

국문 초록

20세기 전반의 모더니즘 미술에서 인간의 몸에 대한 예술적 탐구는 분열된 자아와 상실된 인간성 등에 집중한 결과 순수성이 배재된 그로테스크한 모습으로 표현되어져 왔다. 예컨대, 자코메티(Alberto Giacometti, 1901~1966)의 1932년 作〈목잘린 여인〉은 차라리 인간의 몸이 아닌 벌레의 형상에 가까운데 이는 모더니즘 미술이 지녔던 인간 몸에 대한 왜곡된 시각을 잘 보여주고 있다. 그러나 주디 폭스Judy Fox는 르네상스 시기 완벽한 아름다움으로 표현된 인간의 몸에 주목하며 현 시대상을 반영한 사실주의적 인체형상을 표현해냄으로써 그 계보를 잇고자 했다. 도자, 조각, 회화의 기법들이 혼용된, 독특한 조형기법을 통해 창조된 그녀의 어린아이와 성인 형상의 누드 도자조형들은 고대로부터 지속되어 온 인체 구상조각이 지니고 있는 예술작품으로서의 가치와 의의를 보여주고 있다. 폭스는 미술사에 나타난 동서양의 고대유적과 유물, 조각과 회화작품 중 인체형상에 기반을 둔 작품들을 연구하고 자신의 작품과 연계시킨다. 고전 작품에 함축된 역사적 사건과 의미는 그녀의 사실적인 인체형상을 만나 현재로 지속되고, 서사적인 구도의 배치는 새롭게 그 관계성을 전개시킨다. 아이들의 형상은 구상조각에의 열망과 아직 분화되기 전의 상태인 순수한 인간의 몸을 그려보고자 하는 의지에서 만들어졌으나 결국 이 시대 어른들의 일그러진 시선으로 그 본질은 훼손되고 퇴색 된다. 그러나 폭스는 이것 역시 결국 인간사가 그러한 것처럼 자연발생적인 것에 대한 거스를 수 없는 힘, 어쩌면 작품 스스로의 진화라고 간주한다. 결국 아이 형상의 작품들은 이 사회의 불편한 性 의식을 다루게 되었으며, 그녀의 섬세한 성인의 누드는 여성주의 문제(feminism issue)에 대한 그녀의 관심을 반영하며 여성성에 관한 새로운 담론을 제시한다. 본 연구는 주디 폭스의 작품 양식 중 1980년대 중반부터 현재까지 발표한 인체형상의 도자조형작품을 중심으로 사실주의 표현의 조형적 특성을 분석한 것으로, 그 내용은 연구자를 포함한 동시대 작가들에게 시사 하는바가 매우 크다고 생각된다.

영문 초록

Exploring human body in modern art in the first half of the twentieth century focused on the subjects such as schizophrenia or loss of humanity, which resulted in grotesque expressions and no more pure observation. Woman with Her Throat Cut (1932) of Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966), for example, can be seen as an insect rather than a human, which shows well enough the distorted eyes of modern art. Judy Fox (1957- ), however, pays attention to those beautifully executed studies of human body in the Renaissance period and joins this sculptural genealogy through realistic expression of human form that reflects today. Her nude images of babies, children, and grown-ups are created by her combined techniques from sculptural and ceramic ones and they tell viewers the value and meaning of figurative human body sculptures as art work. Fox studies human forms from the relics, remains, sculptures and paintings of the past, from East and West and links them with her own work. Historical events and its meaning implicated in the existing art are re-presented today through her realistic human bodies, and the narrative installations of her objects expand the relationship between them in a new way. Her sculptures of nude children were made with her affection for figurative sculpture and her will to depict pure form of body before puberty, but her original intent was distorted and faded by adults with an improper thought today. Fox, however, regards this too as kind of evolution of work of art and a natural force we cannot control like human history. In the end, these sculptures of nude children come to deal with our society’s uncomfortable consciousness towards sex, and her meticulously finished adult nudes are interpreted as her interest in feminism. The aim of this study is to explore and analyse the root of Judy Fox’s realistic expression for formative art especially with her works from mid-1980s to the present, and it stimulates the artists of this generation including I, the author of this thesis.
