고등학생 시민의식에 영향을 미치는 학교 경험 분석

국문 초록

이 연구는 우리나라 고등학생들의 시민의식이 어떻게 변화하는지를 살펴보고, 그 에 영향을 미치는 학교 경험이 무엇인지를 탐색하기 위하여 수행되었다. 이를 위해 한국교육종단연구에서 2007년과 2010년, 즉 중학교 3학년과 고등학교 3학년 시점에 2회 반복측정한 자료를 활용하여 학생들의 공동체의식, 협동성, 정치참여의 평균적인 변화 양상을 파악하였으며, 3수준 다층모형을 활용하여 각각에 영향을 미치는 학교 특성 및 학교 경험 변인을 파악하였다. 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 고등 학생들의 협동성은 중학생 때와 비교하여 감소한 반면, 정치참여 수준은 증가하였다. 둘째, 교내 동아리 활동 및 리더십 경험이 있는 학생들은 그렇지 않은 학생과 비교하여 평균적으로 높은 공동체의식, 협동성, 정치참여 수준을 보였다. 셋째, 수업 부적응은 학생들의 시민의식에 일관되게 부정적인 영향을 미쳤다. 넷째, 교내 교우관계 및 교사헌신도에 대한 인식은 학생들의 시민의식에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤다. 마지막으 로 학생들의 시민의식 성장을 위한 학교교육의 역할이 논의되었다.

영문 초록

Purpose: This study aimed to observe how students sense of community, cooperativeness, and political participation levels have changed through Grade 9 to Grade 12, and examine whether various experiences at school predicted the levels. Methodology: Student- and school- level data from Korean Educational Longitudinal Study, which tracked more than 2,000 students through their secondary school years, were used. A series of multi-level models were applied for data analyses. Findings: First, while students political participation have increased, cooperativeness has decreased over the years. Second, students who have joined in club activities and leadership experiences showed higher levels of sense of community, cooperativeness, and political participation. Third, class maladjustment consistently and negatively affected the three aspects of civic engagement. Fourth, peer-relation and teacher engagement were positively associated with civic engagement. Value: Our findings suggest that socio-psychological school environment as well as curricular and extra-curricular activities substantially influenced students civic engagement.
