기장군 설화의 장소 인식 연구

국문 초록

한 지역의 문화적 특성에는 자연환경에서부터 인문 환경까지 여러 복합 적 요소가 영향을 미친다. 이 글에서는 문헌 기록과 대비하여 설화 속에 나타나는 기장 사람들의 장소 인식에 주목하였고, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 기장은 산과 바다를 인접하고 있어서 풍족한 자연의 혜택을 받기도 했지만 동시에 접근성의 부족이나 자연 재해 등으로 인한 어려움도 있었다. 하지만 기장 사람들은 지리적 특성에 적극적인 의미를 부여하고, 대응과 공존의 노력을 잊지 않았다. 둘째, 풍수 관념을 다룬 설화들을 살펴보면 기장 사람들은 살기 좋은 땅이란 지형지물의 형태에 있는 것이 아니라 자연과 사람이 상보적 관계를 이루는 것이라는 점을 잊지 않았다. 셋째, 부족한 문화적 여건과 외부의 부당한 시선에도 지역의 자부심을 잃지 않고, 적극적으로 윤리를 실천 · 강조하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 넷째, 기장 지역 사찰들은 지역민들의 현실적 고통을 해소하는 종교적 공간으로 기능하고 있으면서도 동시에 기장이라는 ‘장소’의 정체성과 자부심을 뒷받침하는 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 기장군은 오랜 역사에 비해 남아 있는 문헌 자료가 부족하고, 자료에 기술된 내용 역시 단편적이거나 일방적인 편견을 담고 있는 등 지역의 참모습을 제대로 반영하지 못하는 경우가 많았다. 장소의 본질은 외부가 아닌 정서적 연대를 가진 내부의 경험 속에 존재한다. 따라서 기장의 장소적 특성은 굳어버린 배경으로서의 공간이 아닌 살아 있는 삶의 ‘장소’에서 찾아 야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

Cultural characteristics of a region are affected by complex elements, natural environment and human environment. This study paid attention to the Gijang people’s awareness about place, shown in the folktales, passed down orally, as compared to literature record. The results are summarized as follows: First, Gijang is adjacent to the mountains and seas, so it has benefited from the abundance of nature, but at the same time, it has suffered from difficulties due to the lack of accessibility or natural disaster, etc. However, the people of Gijang have attached active significance to geographical characteristics and have not forgotten the efforts of reaction and coexistence. Second, to examine the folktales that dealt with the idea of Fengshui, the people of Gijang have not forgotten the fact that a good land to live in is not the form of geographic features but the formation of a complementary relationship between nature and men. Third, it was noted that in spite of insufficient cultural conditions and unjust external glance, they do not lose the pride of the region and actively practice and emphasize ethics. Fourth, Buddhist temples in the Gijang area function as religious spaces that resolve real pains of the locals and at the same time, play an important role in supporting the identity and pride of the ‘place’ of Gijang. Gijang has insufficient bibliographical data remaining as opposed to its history, and the contents described in the materials, too, often, do not reflect the true appearance of the region, properly, e.g. They are fragmentary or include one-sided prejudice. The essence of a place exists in the internal experience with emotional solidarity, instead of the outside. The characteristics of the place of Gijang we should find should be a living ‘place’ of life, not space as a hardened background.
