부산 지역 신선 관련 지명의 형성에 대한 연구

국문 초록

부산은 강과 바다와 산이 어우러진 아름다운 경관 탓에 신선의 땅, 삼신산으로 받아들여졌다. 그러나 사실 부산을 신선의 땅이라고 생각하는 인식은 다른 지역과 다를 바 없이 隱逸, 養生, 修道 등의 태도를 가진 전통적 신선사상에서 벗어나지 않았다. 오래 전부터 지형이나 경관을 보고 신선의 땅으로 생각하는 시각적 인식 태도는 많지 않았다. 그 결과 신선과 관련된 오래된 지명들은 모두 은일, 양생, 수도 등 신선사상과 관련된 인물과의 관련성이 있는 곳, 그 가운데서도 산에 국한되었고, 막연한 신선과 관련된 지명은 나타나기가 어려웠다. 그러므로 동래를 ‘동쪽의 蓬萊’라는 지명의 유래로 설명할 수는 없다. 조선조 말은 전통적인 신선사상이 민족적인 신선, 산신사상으로 확대되면서 신선의 땅에 대한 인식 또한 확대되어 갔고, 이러한 인식에 삼신산의 환상이 더해져서 부산에서도 원래 제대로 된 행정적 지명이 없던 지역, 특히 바닷가에 신선 관련 지명이 많이 생겨나게 되었다. 일제강점기를 거치는 과정에서 일본식 지명으로 바뀌었던 지명은 해방 후 원래의 지명을 회복하거나 새로운 지명을 획득하게 되었다. 특히 일본인 들이 많이 생활하였던 해안가의 지명들은 조선조 말에 형성된 신선의 지명으로 회복되어 가거나, 새로운 신선의 땅으로 이름 지어지는 경향이 확대되었던 것이다. 이것은 조선조 말 형성되었던 민족주의적 신선, 산신사상에다 해방을 맞이한 상황에서 일본에 대한 반일의 감정까지 더해져 생겨난 현상에 기인한 것이라고 생각된다. 이것이 부산의 남쪽 바닷가를 신선의 땅으로 이름지어가게 된 연유였다고 생각한다.

영문 초록

Busan was thought of as a land of Sinseon(a Taoist hermit with supernatural powers) because of its beautiful scenery of the sea, rivers, and mountains in harmony. This conception of Busan as a land of Sinseon has arisen from the traditional thought of Sinseon having the attitudes of seclusion, regimen and discipline, not unlike other regions. Since long ago, not many attitudes of visual recognition of Sinseon land have been formed on the basis of topography and landscape. As a result, old place names related to Sinseon were limited to regions known for the Taoist hermit ideology of seclusion, regimen and discipline, and place names vaguely associated with Sinseon were rarely developed. Thus, Dongnae cannot be explained as the East Bongnae. Around the end of the Joseon Dynasty, as the traditional Taoist hermit ideology developed into the national ideology, the conception of Sinseon land also expanded. Following this trend, many names associated with Sinseon came into being in Busan places where no proper administrative names existed. Especially. those place names changed into Japanese ones during the Japanese colonial rule recovered their original names or obtained new ones. The trend was expanded that seaboard areas where many Japanese lived regained their Sinseon names formed in the end of Joseon or were given new Sinseon associated names. This phenomenon is considered arisen from the combination of the nationalist Taoist hermit ideology developed around the Joseon Kingdom and the anti-Japanese sentiment around the national liberation from Japan. This is the reason why the southern seaboard of Busan was named as the land of Sinseon.
