판소리계 소설에 나타난 기녀의 양상과 서사적 기능

국문 초록

판소리계 소설인 <춘향전>․<강릉매화타령>․<배비장전>․<무숙이타령>의 기녀는 저마다 독특한 성격을 가지고 작품에서 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있다. 이 논문은 판소리계 소설에 나타나는 기녀의 양상과 기능, 서사적 의미에 대해 살펴보았다. 그 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 판소리계 소설에 나타나는 기녀는 유혹형 기녀와 열녀형 기녀로 나뉜다. 유혹형기녀인 <강릉매화타령>의 매화와 <배비장전>의 애랑은 자신이 사랑하는 남자에 대한 헌신보다는 관료사회의 부패와 양반사회의 이중성을 드러내어 문제적 인물을 망신시키는데 앞장선다. 열녀형 기녀인 <춘향전>의 춘향과 <무숙이타령>의 의양은 표면적으로는 기생의 신분을 벗고 신분상승을 목적으로 열녀를 자처하고 있지만, 그 이면에는 가정을 꾸려 안주하고자 하는 의지도 내포되어 있다. 둘째, 기녀의 공모와 대결에 대해 살펴보았다. <배비장전>의 애랑과 <강릉매화타령>의 매화는 사또와 공모하여 주색에 빠져 자신의 본분에 충실하지 못한 배비장과 골생원을 웃음거리로 만들어 망신 주는 데 주동자의 역할을 맡고 있다. <춘향전>의 춘향은 강자와 약자의 대결을 통해 기녀의 절개를 강조하는 한편 관료의 그릇된 인식을 고발한다. <무숙이타령>의 의양은 탕아인 남편과의 갈등과 대결을 통해 남편인 무숙이 건강한 삶을 살아가도록 하고 있다. 셋째, 기녀가 갖는 서사적 의미에 대해 살펴보았다. 판소리계 소설 각 작품에 등장하는 기녀들은 하층민을 대표하면서 기득권층의 문제, 즉 탕자에 대한 문제, 남용되는 관권에 대한 문제, 사회의 부정적인 문제를 비판하며 시정을 촉구한다. 그런 점에서 이 기녀를 통해 민중의식을 읽어낼 수 있으며, 나아가 상하의 조화를 모색했던 의식도 짐작할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Gisaengs in Pansori-based novels, ․․․ play a key role in works with their own peculiar personalities. This paper examined aspects, functions and narrative meanings of Gisaengs appearing in Pansori-based novels. They are summarized as follows. First, Gisaengs in Pansori-based novels are divided into temptation-type ones and virtue-type ones. A seductive gisaeng, Mae-hwa in Gangneung -maehwa-taryeong(classical song), and Ae-rang in Baebijang-jeon(class ical literature) are characters reflecting corruption of bureaucratic society and duality of noble society rather than devotion to men who they love. A virtue-type gisaeng, Chunhyang in and Ui-yang in consider themselves as virtuous women with the pur pose of a lift in their career. Second, This paper examined conspiracy and confrontation of gisaengs. Ae-rang in and Mae-hwa in take on a leader role in making a fool of Baebijang and Golsaengwon[the picture of narrow-minded persons] who get hooked on booze and women and are not loyal to their duty and putting them to shame in conspiracy with the district magistrate. Chunhyang in reports wrong awareness of bureaucrats, while at the same time emphasizing virtue of gisaengs through confrontation between the strong and the weak. Ui-yang in lead her husband, Musugi to live a healthy lif through conflict and confrontation with her husband, debauchee. Third, This paper examined narrative meanings of gisaengs. Gisaengs appearing in each work of Pansori-based novels represent people of lower classes. They criticize problems of the Establishment such as problems of debauchees, problems of abused government power, and negative problems of society and urge correction of them. In this regard, we are able to read awareness of the masses through these gisaengs and further guess that they pursued harmony between the high and the low.
