雲養金允植의 ‘傳’ 硏究

국문 초록

雲養金允植(1835~1922)은 구한말 온건 개화파의 중심인물로 격변하는 정세의 중심에 있었던 인물이다. 운양이 활약하던 시대의 조선은 이전의 어느 시대에도 비교할 수 없는 변혁과 전환의 시기였다. 이때, 운양은 정치 개혁의 시무에 핵심적 역할을 했으며, 문학 활동의 이론과 실제 양면에서 높이 평가되고 후세에 많은 영향을 끼쳤다. 그의문집으로는雲養集이 있으며, 그가 남긴 대표적인저술로는 일기인 陰晴史와續陰晴史가 있다. 본고는 운양이 저술한 <權兼山傳>, <李元永傳>, <權處士傳>, <金宜煥傳>, <塾師小山先生傳> 등 다섯 편의 전을 연구 대상으로 삼아 이 작품의 실상을 분석하여 특징과 의의를 도출하였다. 운양의 전에 등장하는 입전자들은 유협, 악사, 한미한 가문의선비들이다. 운양은 유협인 권겸산을통하여사회의부조리를척결하려는의지를드러냈으며, 악사인 이원영을 통해서는 예술가로서의 고뇌와 재주의 비범함을 찬양하는 기존의 예인전과는 달리 방탕한 삶을 산 자의 표본으로 예인을 선택했다는 점이 주목된다. 또 한 권처사, 김의환, 소산선생을 통해 도덕적 가치를 추구하고, 배운 것을 몸소 실천하는 군자의모습을표현하기도 하였다. 이는당시의사회상을입전자들의삶에 빗대어 묘사하거나, 운양 자신이 지향해야할 삶의 모습을 표현한 것이다. 형식면에 있어서는 도입부-행적부-논평부라는 기존의 전통적 전의 양식을 고수함과 동시에 약간의 변화를 주었는데, 이는 입전자의 특성에 따라 다양성을 추구한 것으로 보인다. 또한 적절한 대화체 사용은 작품의 생동감과 현장감을 살리거나 극적 긴장감을 고조시키고, 동시에 작자의 내면세계를 적절히 드러내는 효과를 내기도 하였다. 때로는 하나의 사건을 가지고 처한 입장에 따라 서로 다른 시각으로 바라보는 인물간의 대비를 통해 인물의 성격과 태도를 매우 선명하게 표현하기도 하였다.

영문 초록

Unyang Gim Yunsik(1835~1922) was a central figure of the moderate enlightenment group during the last period of Korean empire who witnessed the drastic social change at that time. In the era when Unyang was playing an active role, Joseon was undergoing a period of transformation incomparable to any previous era. At this time, Unyang played a key role in the political reforms, and he was highly esteemed both in the theory and practice of literary activities. For this, he is highly regarded and said to have influenced the posterities. He left several works including Unyangjip, a collection of his works, Eumcheongsa and Sok Eumcheongsa, both of which are his diaries. In this paper, five tales written by Unyang - Gwongyeomsan jeon [A Tale of Gwon Gyeomsan], Yi Wonyeong jeon [A Tale of Yi Wonyeong], Gwoncheosa jeon [A Tale of a Reclusive Scholar Gwon], Gim Uihwan jeon [A Tale of Gim Uihwan], Suksasosan seonsaeng jeon [A Tale of Mr. Suksasosan] - are analyzed to discover their features and significances. The protagonists from Ungyang s tales are from insignificant social class such as wanderers, musicians and reclusive scholars. With such characters like Gwon Gyeomsan, Unyang revealed his intention to root out the absurdity prevailing in the society. With Yi Wonyong, a musician, he described this artist as a libertine unlike the previous tales praising the agony and the extraordinary talent of artists. In addition, he pursued moral values through characters such as the scholar Gwon, Gim Uihwan, and Mr. Sosan and expressed the life of a gentleman who practiced what he learned. This is to portray the social image of the time, or to represent the ideal life that Unyang himself should have aimed for. As for the formation these tales, he adhered to the traditional style with introduction - execution - comment - part and changed it a little, which seems to pursue diversity according to the characteristics of the protagonists. In addition, his colloquial writing style seems to have a positive effect on the liveliness and sense of presence of those works, to heighten dramatic tension, and to expose the inner thoughts of the author. The personality and attitude of a person are very clearly expressed through the contrast between other characters who are viewed from different perspectives according to their positions in the same event.
