손창섭 전후소설의 초점화 양상 고찰

국문 초록

본고는손창섭의단편인전후소설중일인칭시점인<유실몽>과삼인칭시점인<치몽>의 서술 방식과 결부된 초점화 양상을 고찰해 보았다. 그의 소설에서 초점화에 주목한 것은 발신자인 내포작가가 수신자인 내포독자를 상정하여 전후의 시대 현실을 환기하는 서사적 담화 체계로 인식했기 때문이다. 따라서 본고는 그의 단편 중 일인칭 초점화자와 삼인칭 초점인물로 대별된 두 작품을 통해 내포작가가 내포독자들을 어떠한 방식으로 통제하고 조정하는가에 대한 결과물에 해당한다. 우선일인칭시점인<유실몽>의 초점화자‘나’는병적 탐색의 정신에 바탕을 둔주동적 행위자이자 작중인물과 세계를 관찰하는 수동적 행위자이기도 하다. 따라서 서술 주체인 ‘나’의자의식을초점화하면서도작중인물들에대해서는객관적서술태도를견지한다, 그로 인해 내포작가와내포독자와 소통하는 모종의 간접화의 맥락(context)이 형성된다. 이같은 초점화자의 이중적 서술 태도에는 내포작가와 내포독자가 교감하면서 자연스럽게 전후의 현실을 환기하는 특질이 내포된다. 이에 반해 삼인칭 시점인 <치몽>에서 서술자는 ‘초점인물’을 객관적 거리에서 관찰하다가도 극화된 상황일 때에는 내부 시점에서 발화하는 ‘가변 초점화’라는 서술 방식을 선택한다. 이 경우 삼인칭 서술자는 초점인물의 우울한 자의식을 내면화하므로 내포독자들을 텍스트 내부로 편입시키는 지위를 떠맡는다. 이 같은 거리 조정은 내포독자가 텍스트내의 인물 편이 되게끔 잠재적 영향력을 끼치기도 하지만, 내포작가의 주관적 의식을 통제하는 수단으로도 효과적으로 기능한다. 이상의 논의대로 손창섭은 <유실몽>과 <치몽>에서 서술상의 대립적인 기법을 통하여 주관과 객관을 넘나드는 거리 조정을 통해 긴장을 일으키는 서술 방식을 구사한다. 이러한 기법의 이중적 원리는 담화의 관점에서 수화자인 내포독자가 텍스트에 참여하는 해석의장을마련해준다. 그결과본고에서는그가선택한초점화방식이란전후의현실과인간상을 사실적으로 보여주는 동시에 내포독자와의 미학적 거리를 조정하는 서사 미학적 장치였다는 사실을 도출할 수 있었다.
