This study investigated traffic flow improvement alternatives for the freeways with poor locational conditions by analyzing vehicle speed reduction factors with regard to traffic and geometric conditions of the upstream section of tunnel on freeways. The results of this study might be summarized as follows. Firstly, the result of traffic congestion analysis showed that the eight tunnels among the fourteen tunnels investigated in this paper were under congestion by producing the congestion ratio ((congested speed threshold - speed at a point)/congested speed threshold) 6.10∼32.20% . Secondly, the result of t-test showed that the speed reduction of vehicles in a platoon head took place at the immediate downstream point from the entrance of tunnel due to the psychological impacts of the dark and narrow atmosphere of tunnel. These impacts caused the vehicle speed reduction of 5.10㎞/h at the entrance of tunnel. Thirdly, the result of stepwise regression analysis showed that a dependent variable, SD (speed reduction of vehicles) was explained by the two independent variables such as R(reciprocal of horizontal curve radius) and GL(length of grade of more than 2 %) . The regression equation was represented by SD=5.185+6.596R+3.519GL (R^2=0.702). Lastly, as the result of Pearson correlation coefficient estimation between SD and each of the candidates for independent variables, the coefficient between SD and R was 0.793(p-value=0.001), the coefficient between SD and W(shoulder width of road in front of tunnel) was 0.447(p-value=0.109), and the coefficient between SD and G(grade in front of tunnel) was 0.273(p-value=0.345). Therefore, the reason why GL was selected at the last step of the stepwise regression might be mainly due to collinearity problems between R and each of W, G.
