영문 초록

In this paper, we examine Korean regional income differences, regional income convergence, regional income variations, regional production efficiencies, and suggests several schemes for developing Kwangju-Chonnam area and so for reducing regional income differences. According to this study, there is only a minimum evidence of Korean regional income convergence, and Korean regional economies could be classified into three groups by the sources of regional income variations. This paper also finds production efficiency differences in regional manufacturing: the degree of production inefficiency of Kwangju-Chonnam is much higher than that of whole country. Based on the above analyses about Korean regional economies, this paper suggests that the effort to attract industrial capitals, efficiency improvement of regional industries, the transaction cost reduction by local government, and the way of thinking changes of local residence are required to develop Kwangju-Chonnam area.
