근대 척독집을 통해 본 한문 교양 의 대중화와 그 의미

국문 초록

근대 척독집은 한문 전통이 구습으로 타자화되기 시작한 1900년대 이후 50년대까지 꾸준히 많이 팔린 한문서간의 학습서이다. 본고는 근대 척독집이 한문 소양을 신장시켜주는 한문 교양서 의 성격을 갖고 있다는 데서 출발했다. 그리하여 구시대 상층의 배타적인 지적 교양이었던 한문이 근대 이후 대중적 교양으로 부각되는 과정과 의미를 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 우선 주요 척독집의 저자인 김우균, 노익형, 지송욱, 고병교 등이 근대의 대표적인 출판업자 계층과 밀접한 관계가 있으며 척독집이 근대 출판업에서 상당한 이윤을 보장하는 책이었음을 지적하였다. 또한 본고에서는 근대 척독집의 주요 저자 서문을 통해 척독의 유용성 논의를 분석하였다. 이를 통해 한문 서간을 당대 대중이 꼭 갖춰야 할 교양으로 제시하는 과정에서 부각되는 것이 특히 한문 글쓰기 의 능력이었음을 주목하였다. 이때 쓰기 라는 한문 문식성을 획득해야 하는 대상으로 지목된 이들에는 한문을 처음 배우는 초학자, 젊은이 뿐만이 아니라 당대의 전통적 지식인층인 유자, 선비 도 포함되고 있었음을 밝혔다. 이러한 근대 척독집의 의미는 조선시대 상층 남성들의 배타적인 교양으로서의 한문을 근대의 대중 교양으로 전유하였다는 데에 있다고 보았다. 특히 일상적 교유 수단으로 서간 이라는 장르가 긴요하고 필요하다는 기능적 성격은 대중들에게 특히 강한 설득력을 가지게 했을 것이라고 보았다. 더욱이 발췌, 인용, 편집, 생략 등의 단순하고 쉬운 방법으로 한문의 쓰기 가 가능하게 유도한 점은 근대 척독집의 대중성을 더욱 확고하게 해주었다고 보았다. 이렇게 한문을 근대의 대중교양으로 정립한 척독집은 근대 조선의 비동시성을 체현하며 근대 한문의 문화적 위상과 변화를 복합적으로 조망하게 해준다.

영문 초록

Chinese character was the cultural studies exclusive for the upper class during the Middle Ages. However, during the modern period of Korea, it came to be popular cultural studies through the Chinese letter textbook, Modern Study Materials for Writing Letters in Chinese. This research investigated the phenomenon of spread of modern study materials for writing letters in China since 1900. Through this, this research searched the point that the ability to write Chinese letters came to stand out as refinement of the modern people . Modern study materials for writing letters in Chinese was a popular practical book, a kind of best-seller that sold the most among the modern publication. The first modern study materials for writing letters in Chinese, Kim, woogyun s was sold as many as Choi, nam-seon s or Lee, gwang-su s . The point that major writer of modern study materials for writing letters in China was a publisher proves that the Study materials for writing letters in Chinese left the publisher with profit. The three points that this research intended to focus on and determine in respect of this spread phenomenon of Modern study materials for writing letters in Chinese are as follows. First, literacy of writing Chinese letters stood out as an important refinement of the public during that time. Second, among those who intended to acquire ability of writing Chinese letters, there were classical scholars , traditional intellectuals of that period. Third, Study materials for writing letters in Chinese was popular, since the functional character of the genre, letter , was cognized necessary by the modern people. Through this Modern study materials for writing letters in Chinese, the public of that period got closer to Chinese characters that symbolized the authority of the past, accordingly, Chinese characters became the refinement of the public. This has a significance to newly view the existing recognition of literary history that modern Chinese characters have merely declined.
