<하녀들>의 고전 소재 활용과 그 의미

국문 초록

이 논문은 JTBC에서 방영되었던 역사 드라마 <하녀들>에 등장하는 여러 고전 소재를 바탕으로 고전문학이 가지는 문화콘텐츠로서의 현대적 가치를 살핀 것이다. 현대사회에서 매체는 급속도로 발달하고 있으나 이를 채울 수 있는 콘텐츠의 성장은 부족한 형편이다. 고전문학을 문화콘텐츠의 소재로 활용하기 위해서는 그 내용을 창조적으로 분절하고 매체와 효과적으로 결합하는 과정을 거쳐야 한다. 이런 의미에서 문화콘텐츠에 나타난 소재를 분석하고 이들의 현대적 효용을 되짚는 논의는 반드시 필요하다. 역사 드라마 <하녀들>에서 활용한 소재는 매우 전통적이지만 여러 의미를 부여하며 현대적 가치를 가지게 되었다. 고전 속 신발은 주로 남녀사이의 애정을 성취하도록 돕거나 인물의 소재와 행방을 알려주는데, 이 드라마에서 신발은 신분상의 격차와 주인공의 비참한 처지 및 등장인물의 속내를 보여주는 역할을 수행하였다. 그리고 고전 속 지환은 남녀 인물간 결연을 위해 주로 활용되는데, 마찬가지로 이 드라마에서도 남녀 주인공의 굳은 맹세를 확인하는 장치로 사용되었다. 또한 아들이 아버지를 찾기 위해 증표를 얻는 과정이 고전서사에 등장하는데 이 드라마에서는 이것이 동곳과 점으로 대응되어 나타났다. 역사 드라마 <하녀들>은 고전문학의 특정한 내용을 그대로 가져오지 않고 창조적 분절을 통해 소재만 차용한 뒤 여기에 스토리를 입혀 콘텐츠화하였다. 고전 소재를 반복적으로 노출시키는 기법을 바탕으로 고전문학의 현대적 가치를 입증하였는데, 일단 대중에게 익숙한 소재를 활용했기 때문에 시청자가 드라마의 내용을 쉽게 이해할 수 있었다. 또한 고전 소재를 클로즈업해서 자주 화면에 등장시켜 역사 드라마로서 고전미를 획득할 수 있었다. 뿐만 아니라 이미 익숙한 소재를 한 화면 가득 배치하여 그 의미를 파악할 수 있게 하였기 때문에 다양한 매체로 드라마를 시청하는 대중의 습관에 매우 적합할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

Although a huge amount of contents is being produced by a variety of media, there is lack of unique cultural contents containing our indigenous tradition. Many people tried to find the original cultural form from classical literature, to make a story, and to transform it to contents, but it was not continuously connected to success. However, materials, used in the Korean historical television series Hanyeodeul(Maids), now have modern values with implying various meanings even though they are very traditional contents. In classical literature, shoes are used to help a man and a woman become a couple or imply character's whereabouts. In this television series, shoes show the gap between social classes, reveal a miserable situation of the heroine, and imply the intentions of characters. In classical literature, rings are used to show a relation between a man and a woman. In Hanyeodeul(Maids), similarly, rings are used as a tool of assuring a firm pledge between the hero and heroine. In classical literature, a son is trying to find a token of his father and a top-knot pin and mole are used as the tokens in this television series. The historical television series Hanyeodeul(Maids) is produced as new contents through creative segmentation based on the materials of a preexisting story, instead of being made from a certain classical literature. Based on the technique of repetitively exposing classical materials, this television series prove that the values of classical literature is still valid in the 21st century. Above all, viewers are able to easily understand the contents of the series thanks to its materials familiar to the public. In addition, it showed classical beauty as a historical television series by frequently presenting classical materials in close-up. Lastly, it filled the screen with materials familiar to the public so that viewers can understand the implied meanings instantly. This technique is suitable for the current public's practice of watching television shows via various media, not limited in television.
