국문 초록

본고는 <최척전>에 나타난 허실상생의 양상과 그 서사적 의미를 밝히고, 허실이론의 견지에서 이 작품의 사실적 문체가 지닌 위상을 살펴보았다. 본고의 논의를 통해서 다음과 같은 사실이 드러났다. 이 작품은 사실을 바탕으로 하되 작가가 의도한 주제를 효과적으로 드러내는 동시에 독자의 흥미를 유발하기 위해 허구적 요소를 가미하여 사실과 허구가 조화를 이루는 허실상생의 기법으로 창작되었다. 첫째, 최척과 옥영의 서사는 없는 이야기를 만들어낸 것이 아니라 현실생활에 의거한 것이다. 그들의 행적은 현실 속에 있는 귀환포로들과 작가의 직간접적인 체험을 종합적으로 재구성하여 구현한 것으로 예술적 대리인이라는 의미가 있다. 둘째, 등장인물들이 실제로 있었던 일만 하도록 한 것이 아니라 실제 인물과 사건에 구애되지 않고 허구를 섞되, 情理와 배경을 갖추어 문학적 진실이 드러나도록 치밀하게 구성하였다. 셋째, 壯遊에 대한 작가의 욕망 투사, 부부상봉 장면 등에서의 인정세태 묘사, 주제의식 구현 등을 위해서 허구를 가미하여 사실과 조화를 이루도록 구성하였다. 넷째, 사실과 허구를 조합하되 핍진하고 생생하게 묘사하여 흥미를 극대화하였다. 또한 이 작품에는 당시 명나라 문단에 제기되고 있던 허실이론이 창작적 실천으로 구현되어 있음을 확인했다. 명 문단의 최신 사조이며 소설인식에 혁신을 가져온 허실이론이 <최척전>에 구현되어 있다는 사실은 이 작품이 소설사에서 차지하는 전환적 의의를 동아시아 차원에서도 논의할 수 있는 단서이다.

영문 초록

This paper reviews the narrative significance and pattern of how truth and fiction are juxtaposed in and looks at the status of the piece’s realistic style from the perspective of the theory on truth and fiction. The following are findings from the study. This piece is based on truth but adds fictitious elements to trigger the readers’ interest and more effectively portray the theme that the author intended to deliver. This has resulted in a juxtaposition of truth and fiction. First, the narrative of Choi Cheok and Ok Young are not entirely made up but based on real life. Their stories are meaningful in that it is a re-enactment and re-composition of their experience as prisoners of war who are existent in real life. They are the artistic agents of such prisoners in real life. Second, the characters are not only carrying out acts that had actually taken place but their actions are a mix of real facts and fiction. Logic and emotion are used as backgrounds for such action so that in literary terms they are persuasive and have verisimilitude. Third, fiction was added to project the author’s desire for a grand and jolly journey, to portray the public sentiment during the scene where the couple meet each other and to realize the theme throughout the piece. Fourth, truth and fiction are brought together but details are added to give a more dynamic feel and make the scenes more engaging. This piece is also a good example of how the theory of truth and fiction which had been a hot topic at the time in the Ming Dynasty’s literary circles is applied to actual creation of literary works. The fact that the theory of truth and fiction that was the first new literary trend in the literary world during the Ming Dynasty is realized through shows that this piece of literature serves as an important turning point in the history of novels in East Asia which should be recognized by the wider region of Asia.
