바리공주 서사무가에 나타난 한국 목련고사 유전

국문 초록

이 논문은 한국 목련고사 유전 상황을 밝히기 위해 바리공주 서사무가와 목련고사를 비교 연구하였다. 목련고사란 불교 우란분재와 함께 전승되었던 목련의 지옥구모 고사를 말한다. 이 고사는 인도에서 발원하였고 중국에서 발전하여 한국과 일본에까지 전승되었는데, 유전의 시기가 상당히 오래되었고 불교와 민간에 널리 전래되어 중요한 연구 자료가 되어왔다. 한국의 목련고사는 주로 『불설대목련경』을 중심으로 불교와 민간에서 유전되었다. 이 판본은 변문과 유사할 뿐만 아니라 대본으로의 활용이 가능한 판본이어서 그 유전 과정이 상당히 주목되었다. 그런데 무속에서도 바리공주 서사무가가 목련고사를 모방 흔적을 발견할 수 있다. 한국 무속은 그 유파가 많고 무의례 또한 다양하여 연희창 형식으로 진행되는 굿판은 공연적 성격이 짙다. 서사무가 바리공주가 목련고사의 내용을 모방하여 연희창의 형식으로 공연의 성격을 포함한 제의로써 진행되었던 것이다. 이러한 사실은 목련고사와 그 연행이 불교계를 넘어 무속에서도 활발히 전승되었음을 증명해준다. 기실 한국의 무속은 지옥관념이 부족하여 주로 불교에서 습합의 형식으로 빌려와 자신의 모습으로 변용하였는데 이러한 상황에서 불교 목련고사는 모방대상의 최고 우선순위에 있었던 것이다. 중국의 도교 법사희도 불교 목련고사의 연행을 모방한 사실이 있었다. 중국은 초기 변문을 통해 매년 우란분재 때 사찰에서 목련희 공연을 진행하고 있었다. 그 유행의 정도는 지금과 같지 않아 일 년 중 상당히 중요한 행사로서 성대히 진행되었다. 이러한 불교계의 목련고사 전승이 해마다 큰 호응을 얻으며 전승되자 도교의 법사들이 불교 공연 형식의 법회를 빌려와 자신들에게 맞게 변용하여 공연과 도법활동이 융합된 새로운 형식의 목련희 공연을 만들었다. 그러므로 이 도사 법사희는 공연 속에 제의 의식이 들어가 있는 것이며, 제의 과정에 목련희 공연이 진행되었다. 이 도법 형식의 공연이 끝나면 공연의 주제자는 망자가 지옥에서 벋어났다고 믿었다. 이와 관련하여 한국 바리공주 서사무가가 불교 목련고사를 모방하였던 사실은 중국의 도교 법사희의 탄생과 상당히 흡사하다. 한국 역시 불교계의 우란분재 때 목련고사 관련 공연이나 법회가 크게 성행하였는데, 이것을 무속에서 모방하여 기존 바리공주의 원형고사에 목련고사의 구성이나 내용까지 포함시켰다. 이러한 바리공주 서사무가는 무속의 씻김굿 속에서 구연되고, 이 공연격의 구송 과정이 끝나면 망자가 천도된 것으로 여겼다.

영문 초록

This thesis is analysis of Mokryeon old story transmit the Bari princess comparative studies. The Mokryeon old stories were saved his mother hell, were transmitted when was held in Uranbunjae ceremony This stories were started in ancient China, has been handed down to Korea and Japan. It has been studied for a long time in Buddhism and folks. The Korean Mokryeon old stories were transmitted around Bulseoldaemoklearyeankyeong in Buddhism and folks. Bulseoldaemoklearyeankyeong was similar to Byeonmun, and could used with a script. But Korean Mokryeon old stories were imitated in ancient shamanistic Princess Bari celebrations.
