국문 초록

본고는 선문대 총서로 소개된 이후 아직 학계에서 본격적인 연구가 진행되지 못한 작품인 <황주문생록>의 형식적, 내용적 면모를 소개하고 서사의 특징적 국면에 대해 논의하였다. 1920년에 필사되었다고 추정되는 이 작품은 그 책제목이 나온 서목이나 관계 기록이 발견된 바 없고, 유일하게 필사본 한 책만이 전하고 있어 작품의 창작, 향유 시기, 향유층 등 작품 외적 정보를 알기가 어렵다. 따라서 본고는 작품 내의 정보들에 집중하여 이 작품의 특징과 의미를 밝히는 데 주력했다. 우선 이 책이 모본을 축약하는 방식으로 필사되었다는 가능성을 살펴보았다. 이 작품은 사건의 전개가 빠르고 작품 분량에 비해 많은 화소로 구성되어 있는데 여러 군데에서 생략된 부분이 있는바 모본의 내용이 온전히 담기지 못한 것으로 보인다. 다음으로 서사적 특징에 대해 살폈는데 먼저 전대 다양한 장르 소설들의 화소가 어떻게 습합되었는지 분석하였다. 기본적으로 이 작품은 여성영웅소설이라 할 수 있는데 애정소설, 가문소설과의 관련성을 보이며 각각의 화소가 통속적인 방식으로 축조되어 있다. 다음으로 설화적 화소, 즉 고래 화소에 대해 논의했다. 이 작품에는 고전소설에 자주 등장하지 않는 고래가 출현하여 여주인공과 긴밀한 관계를 맺는다. 고래와 여주인공의 관계는 전통적으로 내려오는 龍馬 설화의 ‘말과 장군의 관계’와 유사한바, 이 작품은 동물을 인간의 동반자로 인식하는 전통적 동물관을 잇는 가운데 신비롭고 역동적인 고래의 활약을 흥미롭게 서술하여 작품의 오락성을 강화했다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to introduce the aspects of form and content reflected on , which has yet to be subjected to a full scale study by the academic community after its initial publication in a series by Sunmoon University, and to discuss about the characteristic aspect of its narration. This literature, which is assumed to have been transcribed in 1920, has neither relevant record nor list of books bearing its title. It is difficult to get information on the creation of works, the period of enjoyment, and its readers because only a copy of manuscript has been handed down. Therefore, this study aimed to identify both the meaning and the characteristics of the literary work by focusing on its interior information. Firstly, this study paid its attention to the possibility that it had been transcribed as a way of condensing the original edition. It seemed that the contents of the original edition had not been fully put into this literary work in that it showed fast story development and was consisted of too many story units in contrast to the volume of the works, containing several omissions. Secondly, this study investigated the narrative features of the literary work by analyzing how the story units of the various novels of previous genres were designed. Basically, this is a heroine novel on which each story unit is constructed in a popular way, showing the relevance with Romantic Fictions and Family novels. Lastly, the narrative story unit, so-called “whale story unit,”had been discussed. In this literary work, a whale which doses not appear often in classical novels appears and builds a close relationship with a heroine. The relationship between the whale and the heroine is similar to the relationship between “horse and general,” two main characters of “dragon horse” folk tale which have been traditionally handed down from ancient times. This literary work strengthened the entertainment of the work by narrating the mysterious and dynamic whale in an interesting way while appreciating traditional viewpoint of animals that recognizes animals as companions of humans.
