<옥주호연>의 창작 방법과 여성영웅소설사적 의의

국문 초록

지금까지 <옥주호연>은 ‘여성의 자아실현’이나 ‘남성중심 사회에 대한 비판’을 보여준 작품이라고 평가되었다. 그런데 <옥주호연>이 형성되었던 19세기부터 여성영웅소설이 점차 대중화되었던 점, <옥주호연>이 필사본보다 방각본이나 활자본으로 활발히 유통되었던 점, 여성영웅소설 가운데 진지성을 보이는 작품은 초기 여성영웅소설로 한정해야 된다는 주장이 최근에 제기되고 있는 점 등으로 인해 <옥주호연>의 진지성에 대한 평가는 다시 한 번 검증되어야 할 위치에 놓이게 되었다. 그래서 이 논문은 <옥주호연>의 창작 방법을 살펴봄으로써 작품의 진지성을 재검토하고, 여성영웅소설사에서 <옥주호연>이 어디쯤 위치해 있는가를 확인해보고자 했다. 선행연구의 거듭된 평가와 달리 <옥주호연>은 초기 여성영웅소설이 보여준 진지성을 적지 않게 훼손한 작품으로 이해해야 한다. 이 작품은 초반에 여주인공과 가부장의 극단적인 대립을 통해 당대 남성중심 사회질서에 대한 거부감을 드러내고 있지만, 중․후반으로 진행되면서 남장을 둘러싸고 남녀주인공이 속고 속이는 흥미로운 상황만이 강조되고 있다. 지금까지 이루어진 <옥주호연>에 대한 논의는 작품 초반에 가부장과 심각하게 갈등하는 여주인공의 모습만을 확대하여 얻은 결론이지, 작품의 서사구조나 주제의식을 기반으로 이루어진 평가라 할 수 없다. 초기 여성영웅소설 가운데 <이현경전>과 <홍계월전>이 심각한 갈등상황을 통해 남성중심 사회질서에 대한 반감을 표출한 사실을 고려하면, <옥주호연>은 초기 여성영웅소설이 구현했던 남성중심 사회질서에 대한 반감을 흥미소로 활용한 작품이라 할 수 있다. <옥주호연>의 가치는 19세기 독서대중의 바람을 담아낸 작품이라는 데서 찾아야 한다. 19세기는 중세질서에 대한 회의가 점차 확대되면서 중세사회의 붕괴가 가속화되었고, 방각본이 유통되어 특권계층의 전유물이었던 문학작품이 민중으로 확산되었다. 이러한 19세기 사회적․문학적 환경의 변화에 대응하여 <옥주호연>은 중세질서에 대한 낭만과 불만을 보여준 초기 여성영웅소설의 사유에서 벗어나고자 했다.‘남녀 균형의 서술시각’을 통해 중세적 가족질서를 둘러싼 갈등과 화합보다는 1:1의 남녀 애정관계를 지향했으며,‘감춤-드러냄의 지연 구조’를 마련하여 남장을 기반으로 한 남녀주인공의 갈등을 흥미소로 활용하였고, 역사적 사건인‘진교병변’을 활용하여 소설적 리얼리티를 확보해 나갔다. 이처럼 <옥주호연>은 중세 사회에 대한 낭만과 불만을 보여준 초기 여성영웅소설의 사유에서 벗어나, 19세기 독서대중의 새로운 지향가치를 담아낸 작품이라는 데 의의가 있다. 이러한 <옥주호연>의 작품세계는 19세기 여성영웅소설의 향방을 가늠하는 데 중요한 단서가 된다. <옥주호연>은 남녀주인공이 군담을 통해 혼란한 사회질서를 존화양이론적 국가질서로 재편함으로써, 유가적 지향가치인‘수신제가치국평천하’를 획득하고 있다. 이와 함께 남녀주인공이 노중에서 자유롭게 만나 동행하는 과정을 통해, 구획된 남녀의 영역을 깨뜨려 애정을 성취하는 탈유가적 지향가치를 추구하고 있기도 하다. 이렇게 <옥주호연>에서 유가적․탈유가적 사유가 공존하는 이유는 19세기 문학 환경의 급격한 변화 속에서 사대부와 민중의 바람이 혼효되었기 때문이라고 생각한다. 즉, <옥주호연>은 초기 여성영웅소설에서 영웅담을 통해‘수신제가치국평천하’를 실현하려는 사대부의 바람을 계승하면서도, 19세기에 소설 향유층으로 새롭게 편입된 민중의 진솔한 생활감정을 반영하여‘남녀 동행에 의한 애정성취’를 보여준 것이다. 이러한 <옥주호연>의 모습은 사대부와 민중의 사유가 혼효되는 과정 속에서 전대 작품과 다른 19세기 여성영웅소설이 형성되었음을 알려준다.

영문 초록

has been evaluated as one ofthe heroine novelswhich combine heroic and tenacious tale of both men and women intimately connected to one another, andhandle ‘criticism of androcentric society’ or ‘self-realization of woman’. However, seriousness of is in a position of revalidation because of the several aspects thatheroine novel became popular in 19th century when was written, that was distributed as a commercial novel and a printed books than as a manuscript, and that there was an argument to restrict recent heroine novels with seriousness to only those of early stage novels. Thus, this thesis is to re-evaluate by examining ’s manner of writing, and to identify its position among heroine novels. Unlike a series of evaluations of advanced research, is considered as a literary work that deeply destroyed its seriousness, described in those of early heroine novels. This literary work presents a repulsion of male-dominated public order of the time by a radical conflict between heroine and patriarch at the beginning, however, as it continues to middle phase and the latter half, only deceiving situation between hero and heroine is emphasized. The discussion, that has made so far, was concluded by focusing on heroine from the radical conflictsbetween heroine and patriarch, but not the discussion based on a narrative structure nor thematic consciousness. Considering the fact that described in and among heroine novels,which reflect a repulsion of a male-dominated society order, is a literary work that depicts the repulsion, realized in early heroine novels, as an interesting element. The value of should be found where the desire of reading masses in 19thcentury was included in this work. In 19thcentury, as the skepticism of medieval order expanded, the erosion of middle age was accelerated, and the distribution of commercial novels led expansion of a literature that had been an exclusive property of the privileged class. In response to these social and cultural circumstances in 19th century, intends to break away from early heroine novels which reflect romance and dissatisfaction of medieval order. Through descriptive perspective of the man and woman balance, it preferred the 1 on 1 relation between the sexes than the conflict and harmony of medieval family order,and prepared an interesting element as a conflict between different sexes by ‘hide-revelation lag structure’. , also, secured fictitious reality by utilizing historical event, such as ‘jingyobyeongbyeon’. Therefore, the meaning of is a new intended value of 19th century to reading masses that were different to preceded heroine novels. Also, the world of can be a significant evidence to judge the direction of 19th century heroine novels. As reorganizing the order of nation through the war history, it shows how Confucian intended value, ‘Cultivate your morals, manage the family, then rule a nation and the world,’ can be gained. By accompanying two different sex characters, earned none-Confucian vision.The coexisting reasons of Confucian vision and none-Confucian vision are according to the rapid change of 19th century literature milieu andthe confusion of two different desires between privileged class and ordinary people. In other words, succeedsthe ideaof privileged class,‘Cultivate your morals, manage the family, then rule a nation and the world,’yet, reflects the new life feelings,‘achievement by accompanying woman and man,’of ordinary peoplewhohadnewly transferred thoughts about 19th century novels. These reflection provesanew form of heroine novel was made under the confusion of two different desires between privileged class and ordinary people.
