최치원의 삶과 시적 대응

국문 초록

우리문학사에서 최치원의 족적은 매우 뚜렷하다. 그러나 그간의 연구들은 그의 명편들을 단편적으로 다루거나 그의 시에 드러나는 일부 특징을 확대 해석하여 최치원 시 세계의 실상을 올바로 파악해 내지 못한 면이 있다. 본고는 최치원의 삶의 특징적 변화를 보이는 지점에서 그의 시적 대응도 변화를 보인다는 사실에 착안하였다. 그의 삶과 그의 시가 조응하고 있음을 분석하여 그의 삶의 자세와 변화를 시 세계의 변화와 함께 검토하였다. 최치원의 삶은 그 출발부터 매우 적극적이었다. 그는 자신의 삶의 문제들은 노력으로 극복 가능하다고 보았다. 육두품의 신분적 제약은 당나라 유학을 통해 극복하려 했고, 실제로 인백기천(人百己千)의 노력으로 과거에 급제하기도 하였다. 그러나 외국인으로서의 그의 위치는 당나라에서 불안하기만 했다. 관직을 받기까지 오랜 시간을 기다려야 했고 기다려 얻는 것도 말단관직이었다. 그런 상황에서 벗어나기 위해 최치원은 박학굉사과를 준비하였으나 형편이 여의치 않자 고병의 막부에 들게 된다. 자신의 노력으로 앞길을 개척하려 한 것이다. 이때 쓴 진정시(陳情詩)는 문학적 역량을 이용하여 영달의 길로 나아가려한 최치원의 모습을 보여준다. 이런 적극적 대응은 신라 귀국 후 헌강왕에게 지어올린 ≪계원필경집≫의 찬술 목적에서도 확인된다. 다른 한편, 최치원은 중국에 머무는 동안 소지음(少知音)의 상황을 절감하였다. 타국에서 외국인으로 살아가는 동안 이런 소지음의 인식은 심화되었고 그가 느끼는 이상과 현실 사이의 거리도 차츰 더 멀어져 갔다. 이런 상황은 신라 귀국 후에도 이어졌고 이런 이상과 현실 사이의 갈등도 여러 차례 시로 형상화되었다. 신라 귀국 후 오래지 않아 외직을 전전하게 되면서 최치원은 은거 지향을 구체화시킨 듯하다. 자신의 노력만으로는 해결할 수 없는 현실적 문제를 인정하게 된 것이다. 그러자 동경의 대상이기만 하던 자연 공간이 자신을 의탁할 공간으로 인식되었다. 탈속과 은거를 지향하는 자세는 여러 차례 변화를 보이며 심화되다가 마침내 종적을 감추는 방식으로 귀결되었다. 이 연구는 삶에 대한 최치원의 여러 자세들을 살피고 그런 삶의 자세가 그의 시 세계에 어떻게 형상화되어 나타나는지를 검토하였다. 이런 작업은 그래서 그의 문학적 삶을 재구하고 최치원 시 세계의 실상에 다가서는 데 일정 부분 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Choi Chi-won’s footprints are quite remarkable in the History of Korean Literature. However, previous studies treated his masterpieces fragmentarily or exaggerated some of the characteristics observed in his poetry, failing to grasp the reality of Choi Chi-won’s poetic world. This study was started from the fact that Choi Chi-won exhibited his poetic responses at the points of time when he experienced characteristic changes in his life. By analyzing how his poetry interacted with his life, this study explored the attitudes and changes of his life along with the development of his poetic world. Choi Chi-won’s life was very active from the beginning. He believed that he could overcome his life problems through efforts. He attempted to overcome the restriction in his social status under the rank system of Shilla through studying in China, the Tang Dynasty, and succeeded in the civil service examination through the efforts of Inbaekgicheon (人百己千 - ‘I do 1000 times when others do 100 times’). His position as a foreigner, however, was quite unstable in China. He had to wait long until being appointed as an official only to get an obscure position. In order to escape from such a situation, he prepared Boxuehongcike (博學宏辭科 - Erudition and Literacy Examination), but because of adverse situations he joined the camp of Gao Bing (高棅). It was to open up his future through his own efforts. Pleading poems (陳情詩) he wrote in those days show Choi Chi-won’s struggle to rise using his literary talents. Such an active response is also confirmed in the purpose of compiling Gyewonpilgyeongjip dedicated to King Heongang after returning to Shilla. While staying in China, on the other hand, Choi Chi-won felt keenly the situation of Sojieum (少知音 - having no friend upstanding my heart). His awareness of Sojieum grew deeper while he was living as a stranger in the foreign country, and the gap that he felt between ideals and realities also grew wider. This situation continued after he returned to Shilla, and such conflicts between ideals and realities were configured several times in his poems. Not long after returning to Shilla, he moved from and to provincial posts and it seems that he shaped up his idea to live in retirement during that time. He came to admit that there were real problems insurmountable through his efforts alone. Then, natural space, which had been an object of yearning, was seen as a place to which he could rely on. His attitude oriented to being unworldly and living in retirement was deepened through several turnovers and was finally concluded in the form of disappearance. This study examined Choi Chi-won’s different attitudes toward life and how such attitudes were configured in his poetic world. This work is expected to make some contribution to reconstructing his literary life and understanding the realities of Choi Chi-won’s poetic world.
