국문 초록

조선시대 공적ㆍ사적 연회에서 여악(女樂)을 담당했던 기녀집단은 신분적 성적 타자인 여성의 몸이 어떻게 제도 속에 다각적으로 활용되었는지를 보여준다. 이러한 기녀는 근대 시기에 관기 제도가 해체되는 과정에서 공창제와 같은 일본의 식민정책과 자본주의적 유흥산업의 침투 속에서 재배치되면서 존재방식의 변화를 겪게 된다. 무엇보다도 기생조합이라는 새로운 관리시스템을 통해 재구성된 기생집단은 식민권력의 통제 하에 갖가지 관제적 행사에 동원되는 한편, 요리집과 같은 상업적 공간에서 기예를 상품화하는 과정에서 유흥공간의 접대부로서의 성격이 강화된다. 하지만, 이러한 기생조합 내부의 기생들은 일제의 지배력에 온전히 포섭되지 않으려는 대항의식과 민족 내부에서의 기생을 부정하는 시선과 이중으로 충돌하면서 예인으로서의 자신들의 사회적 입지를 모색한다. 또한 조합 내의 경영진이나 요리집과 같은 조직과의 갈등 속에서 동맹 파업과 같은 행위를 통해 자신들의 권익을 확보하려는 집단적 대응양상을 보인다. 그러나 이러한 조합 내의 기생들의 조직적인 자치 활동은 식민지 당대 사회주의 운동과 긴밀히 관련 맺은 노동조합의 역사에서 소외되어 있었음을 확인할 수 있다. 하지만, 제도의 주변부에서 다각적으로 활용되면서 그 존재가치를 부정당했던 기생들이 스스로 모색한 자기 확인 작업과 대사회적 목소리는 근대 공적 공간 속에 등장한 여성 집단의 존재방식과 아울러 그들이 행한 기업(妓業)을 여성 노동의 한 형태로서 새롭게 문제 제기한다.

영문 초록

The Kisaeng(female entertainer) group who were given work of performing music and dance in official and private banquets in Choseon period shows how the female body in a lower class could be appropriated through the social system. However, after the abolishment of the traditional Kisaeng system in modern period, Kisaeng group underwent a great change, being redistributed in the Japanese colonial policies and capitalistic pleasure business. Most of all, the Kisaeng group were reconstructed in a new management system called "Kisaeng association" and under the control of the colonial power, they were mobilized in an official events and degraded to a kind of waitress in a restaurant where they were forced to sell the artistic achievements as well as to serve the table meeting. However, inside the activities of Kisaeng association, there were found the self-consciousness of Kisaeng as a professional performer and counteraction against the colonial power and groping for their social identity when they were faced with the hostile eye of the Korean nationalists or torchbearers. Futhermore, they presents the collective reaction against the administrators of the association and other organization like a restaurant when they were required to protect their own interest through a labor strike. The autonomous activities of Kisaeng in the Kisaeng association were close to the those of the general labor union in alliance with socialist group, but Kisaeng is not found in the history of labor union in colonial period. Nevertheless, the self-affirmation and social voice from Kisaeng group, who were diversely utilized but incessantly disparaged and refused by the official society, presents a way of being as a women workers in a modern public sphere and the meaning of their labor to entertain male customers with erotic skills as well as the artistic achievements.
