구여성의 소설 <고씨효절록> 연구

국문 초록

<고씨효절록>은 이씨부인이 딸의 일생을 기록한 작품으로, 작가는 고전소설의 형식에 따라 객관적 거리의 서술자를 통해 사적 감정의 토로와 차별화하여 사건을 서술하고 있으며, 사건을 재구성하여 현실적 모순을 인과의 논리로 설명하고 있다. 또 선악의 대립 구도를 활용하여 딸의 시가에 대한 노골적인 비난이 가능하도록 했다. 이 작품은 이러한 창작 방식을 통해 주인공 고영옥의 입장에서 세대 갈등과 부부 갈등, 구여성과 신여성의 갈등을 다루고 있는데, 서술자는 기본적으로 고영옥의 삶에 시련을 가져온 새로운 문화 전반에 대해 강하게 질타하고 전통적 가치를 존중하는 구여성을 적극적으로 옹호한다. 이러한 갈등은 당시의 시대상을 집약적으로 보여주는 것으로, 그 가운데 신질서의 수용 과정에서 겪게 되는 시행착오와 부작용들을 곳곳에서 노출시키고 있다. 그러나 <고씨효절록>의 작가는 이러한 당대 문제의 시대적 함의를 읽지 못하고 주인공의 행/불행 여부에 매몰된 현실 인식의 한계를 드러낸다. 3.1운동이나 일제와 관련된 문제에 대해 적극적인 옹호나 부정, 혹은 저항을 보이지 않는 것도 같은 맥락에서 이해할 수 있는 한계에 해당한다. 단지 작가는 고전소설의 양식을 차용한 경험의 재구성을 통하여 개인적 시련에 대한 심리적 보상을 꾀했던 것으로 짐작할 수 있다. 한편 <고씨효절록>에서 서술자는 자신의 심리적 보상과 함께 '고영옥' 개인의 '삶의 질'에 대한 진지한 고민을 드러낸다. 교육을 통해 고영옥에게 보다 나은 삶을 보장해 주고자 하거나 딸이 내면화하고 있는 '효절'에 대해 부질없는 것으로 평가하면서 '여성'에 대한 관념적 문제제기가 아니라 생활에서의 각성을 보여준다. 이는 서술자의 목소리를 통해 강조하던 가부장적 이데올로기의 실현과 모순되는데, <고씨효절록>의 작가는 시대 인식의 한계와 심리적 보상을 이유로 작품의 문면에서는 절대 가치의 체화를 옹호하고 있으나, 서술자의 목소리를 비집고 '효절' 이데올로기에 대한 허무감을 드러내고 있는 것이다. 작가의 이러한 각성이 지식인 여성 작가들이 표방하던 적극적인 형태의 깨달음은 아니지만 몸에 각인된 것이라는 점에서, <고씨효절록>은 여성의 현실인식이 실제 생활 속에서 서서히 변화하는 과정을 보여주는 작품으로 그 자료적 가치를 평가받을 수 있다.

영문 초록

Ms. Ko's Hyogoelrok is a novel in which Ms. Lee talks about the life of family members in a direct line including herself. The author folds the story following the form of a classical novel. And she tells an event through a narrator who is in an objective distance. This keeps the description of an event from being made by personal feelings. Also, the author reconstructs an event that a person experienced when she makes it a novel and explains a paradox in real life by a theory of cause and effect. This novel talks about a conflict between gaps, couples and between New Woman and Old Fashioned Woman. The narrator strongly reproves a new culture and the people following it. Basically the new culture causes Ko Young-Ok's life into difficulty. But she takes up a positive attitude about women who respect traditional values like filial piety and virtuous life. Actually these conflicts are shown through Mr. Chang's family. The conflicts are the indications of the times and show trial and error, paradoxes and side effects caused by accepting new orders. Mr. Ko's Hyogoelrok, however, does not catch the entailment of the times. The author's point of view focuses on the fact that the hero or heroine is happy or unhappy and it falls short of realizing the reality of life. Mr. Ko's Hyogoelrok shows another point of view of the author. The view of the narrator is limited to a woman, Ko Young-ok, but this novel shows a thought about the quality of life of the woman. It shows that education can make Ko Young-ok live a better life and regards the idea like "filial piety and virtuous life" as nothing. It means that she comes to realize the problem of 'woman' not ideally but in real life. As you see, the author evaluates Ms. Ko's life in two different point of views. This is because she realized the life following a patriarchal idea is in vain when she watches her daughter's life. Through the voice of the narrator, she denies the new way of life, which threatens Ms. Ko's life, and she thinks traditional values such as virtue of wife are significant. At the same time, she shows conflicts between them At the end, she admits that "the value of life" can not lead to the better life. Therefore, Mr. Ko's Hyogoelrok shows women in early 20 century doubt the goals of life and values that women in the earlier times take for granted and think about a new life based on their own experience.
