도시의 발달과 고전소설의 인물다변화 양상

국문 초록

이 논문은 연암소설을 중심으로 18세기의 도시화와 고전소설의 인물다변화 양상을 살핀 것이다. 우선 연암과 도시 및 도시민의 관계를 살핀 다음, 인물다변화 양상을 독과점 업자, 도시빈민층, 임노동자, 자영업자 등으로 나누어 검토해 보았다. 이를 바탕으로 인물다변화가 갖는 의미를 문학사적인 관점에 서 살펴보았다. 그 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫 번째로, 도시 및 도시민과 연암의 관계이다. 상업의 발달과 화폐경제의 활성화는 필연적으로 도시문화의 발전을 불러왔다. 18세기는 신해통공에서 알 수 있듯이 상업이 발달하고 화폐 사용의 증대로 도시화가 크게 진척된다. 나아가 도시에서의 생활이 부를 축적하거나 생계를 유지하는 데 도움이 되어 많은 유민노동자들이 도시로 유입된다. 이들이 도시의 기층민을 형성함으로써 도시의 인물군상도 그만큼 다변화될 수 있었다. 연암은 바로 이러한 도시에서 나고 자라서 도시문화나 도시민의 생활상을 잘 알 수 있었고, 그러한 실태를 그의 한문단편에 적절히 포섭해 놓은 것이라 하겠다. 두 번째로, 연암소설의 인물다변화 양상을 고찰해 보았다. 상업경제의 발달에 따른 도시화가 궁극적으로는 연암소설의 인물다변화를 촉발하였다. <허생전>에서는 양반도 상업활동에 종사할 수 있음을 확인하는 한편, 허생의 행위를 통해 당시의 매점매석에 대한 문제를 지적하였다. <마장전>에서는 도시의 하층민들을 내세워 양반들의 벗 사귐이 말 거간꾼의 그것과 다름없음을 지적하였다. <광문자전>에서는 도시빈민층이 중인의 부잣집에 임노동자로 고용된 사정을 다루는 한편 하층민의 성정을 긍정적으로 인식했다. <예덕선생전>에서는 엄행수를 통해 하찮은 일이지만 자신의 생업을 묵묵히 수행하는 자영업자의 모습을 확인할 수 있다. 세 번째로, 인물다변화와 그 의미를 검토해 보았다. 연암소설이 기존의 인물형상화 방식을 크게 벗어날 수 있었던 것은 연암 당대에 도시화가 진척되고 그로 인해 다양한 인물군상이 활약했기 때문이다. 다시 말해 연암이 도시민의 실상을 적절히 포착하여 등장 인물의 다변화가 가능했던 것이다. 이렇게 다변화된 인물은 기존의 관념적인 인물과 달리 현실적이며 실제적인 특징이 있다. 연암소설이 전형성ㆍ평면성을 탈피하고 근대소설적인 특성을 갖게 된 것도 바로 이러한 요인 때문이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Now It is studied about urbanization in 18th century and the aspect of character's diversification focusing Yeonam's novel. First, It is examined the relation of Yeonam and city or citizen, and then character's diversification is considered divided into monopoly trader, the poor in city, casual worker and owner operator. And then it is considered about what's the meaning of these character's diversification. A summary of these discussion is as follows. First, the city and its citizen, and Yeonam's relation is considered. the development of business and activation of monetary economy could be developed the city as a necessity. In the 18's century, as the business is developed and using money is grown, so the urbanization is progressed largely. So the city's formation could accumulate wealth, or be of help to sustentation, as the migrants worker are flew in force. These people are formed city's basis, and city's characters could be diversified. Yeonam is born and grown with this city. So he is well known these city's culture or citizen's life. And this real condition is revealed in his novel properly. Second, the character's diversification of Yeonam's novel is considered. In some parts of Yeonam's novel, It is treated the urbanization and derived person with that. So the urbanization as followed economy of commerce is a foundation of character's diversification. In Heosaeng-jeon, It is pointed out cornering. In Majang-jeon, It is treated about the friendship put up as the poor. In Gwangmunja-jeon, the poor's mind is treated positively. In Yedeokseonsaeng-jeon, the owner-operator carried out his occupation silently could be checked through eomhaengsu. Third, the character's diversification and its meaning is considered. In Yeonam's novel, existing characters are so changed. And its reason is that Yeonam's time is be progressed the urbanization, thereby various characters could be existed. With these citizen's real condition could be diversified of characters. Yeonam's novel is not typified or flated, And so his novel could have a modern novels's characteristic.
