여성 인물형상을 통해 본 <崔陟傳>의 창작의도

국문 초록

본고는 <최척전>의 여주인공 옥영의 인물형상을 통해서, 창작 당시 작가 조위한이 염두에 두고 있던 예상독자와 창작의도를 살폈다. 우선 전란의 전개에 따른 옥영의 대응양상을 중심으로 인물성격이 어떻게 창조되었는지를 살펴보았다. 첫째, 전란을 배경으로 한 남녀의 결연 과정에서 옥영은 적극적이고 주도적으로 결연을 이루어나간다. 貞節과 진정한 孝를 동시에 쟁취해나가는 지혜로운 처녀/딸로 형상화되었다. 둘째, 전란을 배경으로 한 가족의 이합과정에서 옥영은 여성으로서는 보기 드물고 기이한 해외편력을 한다. 동아시아세계를 돌며 새로운 환경에 적절히 대처하면서 의연히 현실을 열어가는 자립적이고 의지적인 여성으로 형상화되었다. 셋째, 전편에 걸쳐 전란으로 인한 온갖 시련에도 불구하고 옥영은 변함없이 至誠스런 삶의 자세를 견지한다. 지성스런 삶의 자세로 난관을 극복하고 행복을 쟁취하여 행복하고 든든한 가정을 세우는 효녀이자 현모양처요 節婦이자 강인한 어머니로 형상화되었다. 또한 본고는 작가가 이렇게 옥영이라는 여성인물을 형상화한 방식과 작가 자신이 처한 시대적 상황과의 관계를 실마리로 삼아 창작 당시 조위한이 염두에 두고 있던 예상독자와 창작의도를 천착한 결과, 婦女 교훈을 창작의도로, 그의 딸들을 예상독자로 파악했다. 결론적으로 조위한은 <최척전>을 통해, 전쟁의 위협이 도사리고 있는 격동의 시대 속에서 행복하고 든든한 가정의 건설과 회복에 필요한 것은 烈女가 아니라 옥영과 같은 여성임을 보여주며 딸들을 교훈한 것이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Through looking into the characters of the heroine Ok-young in the novel Choicheokjeon, this study aims to examine the expected readers and the purpose of writing that the author Wi-han Cho thought of when creating the novel. Focusing on Ok-young's confronting styles with the war, this study investigated how her characters were created. First, the heroine was engaged in the relationship with a man actively and initiatively in the unstable situations of a war. She was embodied as a virgin and daughter who defended her chastity and achieved a true filial. Second, Ok-young made tours of foreign countries, which was rare and peculiar for a woman in that time, in the process of meeting and parting with her family under the background of a war. Travelling around Eastern Asia, she was being illustrated as independent and volitional woman, adjusting herself properly to new environments and opening a new reality with fortitude. Third, it is described throughout the book that Ok-young held fast to an unchanging and sincere attitude toward her life despite all the hardship of a war. She was embodied as a devoted daughter, virtuous wife and tough mother who came over obstacles before her life with sincere attitude, conquered happiness and established a firm family. Taking as a clue the relation between the author's styles to embody the heroine Ok-young and the situations of the time that the author faced, this study investigated into the expected readers and the purpose of the writing that the author Wi-han Cho thought of. As a result, it was found that the he write the book to give a lesson to women and the expected readers were his daughters. In conclusion, Wi-han Cho pointed a moral through Choicheokjeon that it was not a woman of chaste reputation but a woman like Ok-young who was needed in forming and restoring a happy and strong family in the time of turbulence and threaten of a war.
