The trait of Korean literature is that Korean language literature and Chinese language literature have coexisted and expanded dualistically. They developed by negotiating and interacting with each other, so it helped diversify Korean literature. Among them Shijo(A three-verse Korean ode) and Chinese poetry found ways to make various changes by considerably influencing, and being influenced by, each other. Okso, Kwon Seop(1671~1759) translated his Chinese poetry into Shijo in the middle of this change.
The making process of The 16 Yeong(The Sixteen Songs) of Okso can be defined as self-translation. When you look into the forming process of The 16 Young of Okso, he first created The 8 Yeong(The Eight Songs), the eight poems in the form of a quatrain (in Chinese poetry) with five characters to a line before and after he was 30 years old and later he completed the Chinese Poems of The 16 Young, composing and adding 8 poems in the form of a quatrain with seven words to a line to the former. And based on this he seemed to compose his Shijo, The 16 Young, at the age of between 33 and 42.
The type of Okso's self-translation is to change his Chinese poems into a self-translated Shijo based on the content of his Chinese poems. If you compare the Chinese poems with the Shijo made up of The 16 Yeong, you can see Okso focused the subject and poetic sentiment on the same material itself in composing his Chinese poems. And when translating the Chinese poems into the Shijo, it is confirmed that he realized the personalization of his wrath toward the world through the poetic object.
The self-translating author can revise and complement his own work at his will and has a right to use unconventional language to some extent. Okso reinterprets his own work, making the best of this author's privilege. This aspect is the consciousness of self-translation shown in the creation process of The 16 Yeong and the significance of the history of literature improving the literary value and status.
