국문 초록

사람의 성격이 출생순서에 의해 결정된다는 생각은 구미의 학자들에 의해 이미 오래 전부터 탐구되어 왔다. 같은 형제지만 첫째와 후순위 출생자는 남들을 무작위로 선발한 것처럼 전혀 다른 성격을 가질 수밖에 없다는 것을 증명해온 것이다. 물론 출생순서뿐만 아니라 부모-자식 간의 갈등이라든지 형제들의 경쟁, 기질, 부모의 사망 시기들도 성격 형성에 중요한 영향을 미치는 요인이기도 하다. 그래서 가족 속에서 제 지위를 찾는 유년기는 성격 형성에 가장 중요한 때가 된다. 소설 속에서 출생순서에 따른 성격 형성 문제를 탐구해보는 것은 무척 흥미로운 일이다. 소설 속 인물의 창조는 곧 성격의 창조인데, 그 창조의 원리를 주인공들의 유년기 삶에서 찾으려는 시도는 매우 참신한 것이기 때문이다. 그동안 문학연구에 많은 지원을 받았던 프로이드의 이론이나 프롬의 이론들과도 매우 다르다는 것이 또한 그렇다. 출생순서에 따른 성격 형성 문제를 탐구해보기 위해서, 여기에서는 윤흥길의 장편 『 에미』, 이청준의 장편 『축제』, 신경숙의 장편 『엄마를 부탁해』를 대상으로 했다. 이들 작품들은 아버지의 전적인 부재 또는 부분적 부재가 공통적이어서, 모성이 최대한으로 발휘되는 작품들이기 때문이다. 이런 작품들은 부성(父性)의 부재로 어머니-자식 간의 생존전략이 최대한으로 추구되고 있기 때문이다. 이들 작품에서 출생순위나 부모-자식 간의 갈등을 분석해 보면, 설로웨이나 아들러가 탐구한 이론들이 충분히 설득력 있고 타당하다는 것을 확인하게 된다. 특히 설로웨이가 제시한 성격 특성 5가지에 적용할 때 그렇다. 외향성/내향성, 친화성/적대성, 성실성, 정서안정성, 경험에 대한 개방성들에서 첫째와 후순위 출생자의 경계가 뚜렷하다고 할 수 있었다. 예컨대 첫째는 선취권을 지키려고 방어적 태세를 취하다보니, 부모와 자신을 통일화하고 부모의 사회적 가치를 흡수하고 동화하려는 경향이 짙다는 것이다. 그래서 보수적이고 권위적인 성격을 갖게 된다. 이에 비해 후순위 출생자들은 첫째의 선취권에 맞서지 않고 첫째와는 아예 다른 방향으로 삶을 선택하게 되니, 경험에 대한 개방성이 아주 다양할 수밖에 없다. 타협이 특기가 되니 우호적인 성격을 가지게 된다는 것이다. 형제들의 전략은 일종의 복잡한사업으로 여겨진다. 유년기부터 사업방법을 터득하느라고 성격은 아주 다르게 형성될 수밖에 없다. 형제들은 저절로 남이 되는 것이 아니라, 본능적으로 남이 되려고 노력한다고 할 수 있다. 출생순위를 통해 문학작품 속의 인물들의 성격을 탐구하는 일은 여러 모로 도움이 된다. 문학을 연구하는 사람이나 작가들은 이런 보편적인 진실을 활용하여 더욱 다양하고 깊은 인물탐구의 수단으로 삼을 수 있을 것이다. 작중인물의 성격이 그저 작가의 상상력에 의해 창조된 것이 아니라, 충분히 근거와 설득력이 있다는 것을 제시할 수 있어야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

Mother, Festival and Please Look After Mom are very special novels. It can be seen natural that any parent do their best in raising their kids, it is distinctive in that the mother puts extreme effort to manage her burden without her spouse. Those novels are seen significant because they describe the mother who sacrifices herself extremely for her family or the mother who starts realizing her own accomplishment after finding her social role. The factor of personality formation related to birth order is shown in all those novels. However, due to Confucius ideology, it is not very conspicuous that a firstborn shows his defensive attitude on his prior rights or competitive attitude of children who born later. Being accustomed to the proverb "A firstborn brother is same as parents", and in the reality with the remained custom of primogeniture which was officially abolished after French Revolution in Western countries, emotion and behavior of laterborns in those novels are very restrained. As a result, sometimes it is hard to consider as the factor of personality formation. Conflicts between parents and children are limited to between father and son since all of those novels have no father in their story. Of course there is trouble with mother, but it is described as indistinctive in comparison to much stronger conflict with father. The conflicts between parents and children can not easily be expressed in the society where filial duty is considered natural. In novel mother, the mother wants her firstborn to treat his father as father who has not done any duty of father. After many twists and turns, the firstborn follows his mother's words. This is the ending that did not overcome patriarchism, but returned to patriarchism. In literary works, exceptional cases are seen more important that there should be cases that can not be explained by the theory of competition between firstborn and laterborn and, therefore, we should not be forced to explain based on the theory. In order to do that, selecting various literary works and analyzing birth order would help us to find multilateral characteristics related to formation of personality. The theory about birth order helps authors in creating more diverse personalities in their stories as well as in developing characters more abundantly.
