한국 서사민요와 영미 발라드에 나타난 심리의식 비교

국문 초록

이 글에서는 한국 서사민요와 영미 발라드에 공통적으로 나타나는 비극적 사랑노래 <상사병으로 죽는 총각>과 <다른 데로 장가가다 죽는 신랑> 유형을 중심으로 이를 향유해 온 두 세계 평민 여성들의 심리의식을 비교 분석하였다. <상사병으로 죽는 총각> 유형으로는 <서답게 노래>와 을, <다른 데로 장가가다 죽는 신랑> 유형으로는 <이사원네 맏딸애기>와 를 주 대상으로 삼았다. 이들 유형에 속하는 노래들은 모두 신분이나 경제력이 다른 남녀 간의 자유로운 사랑을 다루고 있어, 이를 쉽게 용인하지 않는 사회적 현실과 인식을 배경으로 하고 있다. <상사병으로 죽는 총각> 유형의 <서답게 노래>와 에서 처녀가 총각의 구애, 구혼을 거부하는 것은 바로 신분이 다른 처녀와 총각 사이의 자유로운 연애를 허용하지 않는 사회적 초자아에 의해 억눌린 욕망이 투사된 것이며, 이는 결과적으로 총각(또는 신랑)의 죽음을 불러온다. <다른 데로 장가가다 죽는 신랑> 유형은 총각이 사랑하는 여자를 두고 다른 데로 혼인함으로써 비극이 발생한다. <이사원네 맏딸애기>에서는 맏딸애기가 신랑을 저주함으로써 신랑이 죽게 되고, 에서는 신부인 갈색소녀가 신랑의 연인을 살해함으로써 결과적으로 세 연인이 모두 죽게 된다. 이는 사랑의 지속과 혼인으로의 연결에 대해 여성들이 겪는 불안함에 대한 방어 기제가 작용한 것으로 읽을 수 있다. 이렇게 비극적 사랑 노래에는 한국 서사민요와 영미 발라드 모두 사랑하는 총각(신랑)의 죽음이 나타난다는 공통점이 있다. 이는 이들 노래의 주 향유층인 평민 여성들의 사랑에 대한 욕망이 사회적 현실(초자아)에 의해 억압되고 있음을 보여준다. 하지만 대부분의 노래가 이러한 억압에 좌절하지 않고 죽음을 극복하는 역설적 결말로 매듭짓는 것은 바로 자아의 이상이 초자아를 이겨내고 실현됨을 보여준다. 이 과정을 통해서 평민 여성들은 자신들의 내면에 내재된 억압을 풀어내고 치유할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This paper compared the psychological consciousness in the Korean Narrative Songs and the Anglo-American Ballads focusing on the tragic love songs. I searched them through dividing those songs into two categories - Bachelor Dying with a Lovesick and Bridegroom Dying with Wedding Another Girl. The Results are as follows; 1) Bachelor Dying with a Lovesick: Projection of the oppressed desire. The Korean narrative songs and the Anglo-American ballads express the social reality that did not permit the liberal love between people in the different social status by the commonly. There are of the Anglo-American ballads, of the Korean narrative songs in this category. The bachelor in the high class is dead in these songs, that shows the projection of the oppressed desire of women in the lower class. 2) Bridegroom Dying with Wedding Another Girl: Defense of the I nsecure love. The Korean narrative songs and the Anglo-American ballads express the tragic consciousness to the realistic circumstances that did not accept the marriage based on the free love by commonly. There are , of the Anglo-American ballads. The bridegroom getting married with another girl is dead on his wedding day in these songs. That shows the defense of the insecure love of women in the lower class. There are common point that a bachelor or a bridegroom is dead in these tragic love songs of the Korean narrative songs and the Anglo-American ballads. It shows that women in the lower class have been oppressed by the social super ego. However, that these songs are closed with the paradoxical conclusion express the realization of the ideal ego. The women in the lower class could overcome the oppression and heal the suffering through singing these songs.
