국문 초록

본 논문은 전영택의 초기소설에 해당하는 <화수분>, <천치? 천재?>, <독약(毒藥)을 마시는 여인>, <흰 닭>을 중심으로 각 작품에 나타난 '죽음'의 의미를 분석하고, 나아가 이들 작품을 통하여 전영택이 드러내고자 하는 작가정신까지 고찰한 것이다. <화수분>과 <천치? 천재?>에서는 작중인물의 종교적 죽음을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 전영택은 <화수분>에서 '화수분' 내외의 죽음과 어린 자식이 나무장사에 의해 구원되는 모습을 병치시켜 보여줌으로써 인도주의적 작가정신을 드러냈다. 또한 전영택은 <천치? 천재?>에서 '칠성'이 그의 천재성을 실현시킬 수 없는 상황을 설정한다. 이러한 현실 상황에서 '칠성'은 자신이 하고자 하는 일을 실현시킬 수 있는 이상공간인 평양을 꿈꾸게 된다. 결국 '칠성'이 평양으로 가는 길에 죽게 되지만, 작가는 '칠성'의 죽음을 '반짝이던 하늘의 별들이 내려다' 볼 정도로 따스함을 강조한다. 이러한 상황 설정은 작중인물의 소멸을 단순히 비극적 죽음으로 인식하지 않고, 종교적 의미를 부여하려는 전영택의 기독교적 인도주의에 기인한 것이다. 일반적으로 1920년대의 소설에는 개인의 분노와 욕망, 나아가 가난이라고 하는 사회적 현실로 인한 파국이 주된 내용을 이루고 있음은 주지의 사실이다. 그러나 전영택의 <독약(毒藥)을 마시는 여인>과 <흰 닭> 등의 작품에서는 기존의 1920년대 소설에 나타난 '죽음'과 다른 특징을 보인다. 특히 이들 작품에서는 각각 '딸'의 죽음과 '흰 닭'의 죽음을 운명론적으로 받아들이려는 전영택의 현실 순응의 자세를 확인할 수 있었다. 이처럼 전영택의 초기소설은 죽음과 밀접한 관련을 맺고 있음이 보다 분명하게 드러났다. 무엇보다도 본고에서는 전영택의 작품에서 형상화된 죽음은 1920년대 리얼리즘 계열에 나타난 죽음의 의미와는 다른 특성이 있음이 밝혀졌다. 즉, 전영택은 작중인물의 죽음을 종교적이고 운명론적으로 인식하고 있다는 점이다. 이는 그의 인도주의적 정신과 현실순응의 작자정신과 일맥상통한다고 볼 수 있다.

This paper analyzes the meaning of death and the spirit of the author Jeon Young-taek investigated further. First of all, the death of the religious figures appear in and .
