科擧 관련 繪畵의 현황과 특징

국문 초록

科擧와 관련된 繪畫는 科擧文化의 다양한 실상을 살필 수 있는 자료이다. 기록으로 고찰할 수 없는 과거시험의 현장이나 儀禮, 축하 행사 등을 담은 그림과 과거시험의 합격 동기생이나 감독관이 기념물로 남긴 그림들이 포함된다. 본고에서는 科擧와 관련된 그림을 記錄畵, 風俗畵, 契會圖로 구분하여 다루었다. 계회도와 기록화는 16, 17세기 자료가 많고, 특정 장면과 주변의 경관을 부각시킨 장면들을 제공해 준다. 반면, 풍속화는 인물묘사 위주의 장면성을 강조한 것으로 특정 공간에서 이루어진 사건들의 현장을 구체적으로 전해준다. 본고에서는 과거관련 그림을 세 영역으로 나누었다. 첫째는 과거시험장의 풍경이다. 小科 시험장과 庭試 및 別試의 장면을 그린 사례가 각각 전한다. 특히 19세기의 소과 시험장을 그린 그림에는 부정행위의 장면이 일부 드러나 있어 당시의 세태를 파악하는데 좋은 단서가 된다. 정시와 별시의 장면을 그린 그림은 서울과 지방에서 치른 文武科 시험의 현장을 그린 것으로 왕실이나 중앙 관청에 보고하기 위한 기록화로 그려진 사례들이다. 둘째, 과거관련 행사인 放榜, 恩榮宴, 遊街의 장면은 기록화로 그려졌다. 의식과 행사가 열리는 장소의 공간적 특징과 宴會의 내용 등을 살필 수 있는 그림들이다. 기록화의 속성상 행사의 주요 장면과 주변의 공간적 배경까지 화면에 포함하여 기록물로서의 내용을 충실히 갖추었다. 세 번째는 同榜 및 試官과 관련된 기록화이다. 주로 계회도 형식의 그림들이 여기에 해당한다. 과거의 합격을 인연으로 생각한 합격 동기생들은 榜會圖를 그려 나누어가졌다. 동기생들 전체의 모임이 아니라 같은 지역에서 우연히 만나거나, 다양한 계기로 이루어진 점도 특색이다. 과거 관련 그림들은 문헌 중심의 연구를 보완해 주고, 조선시대의 과시를 중심으로 이루어진 다양한 실상과 풍속적 요소들을 실증적이고 입체적으로 살필 수 있는 시각 매체라는 점에서 문화사적 의미를 언급할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Paintings for Gwageo(科擧) provide the visual aspects of Gwageo culture. Paintings for Gwageo include those dealing with the sites of Gwageo or related rites or celebrating events we cannot find from records and also those drawn by those who passed the same session of Gwageo or supervisors for celebration. This article deals with paintings for Gwageo with the following categories: documentary paintings(記錄畵), genre paintings(風俗畵), and gyehoedo(契會圖, documentary paintings to celebrate the bureaucrats'gathering). Both gyehoedo and documentary paintings were mostly drawn in the 16th and 17th centuries, and they highlighted particular scenes or landscapes around it. Meanwhile, genre paintings are characterized by highlighting the scenes mostly with the description of persons. This article divided paintings for Gwageo by three areas: the first one deals with the landscapes around the sites of Gwageo. The examples include paintings about sogwa(小科) sites and also those about jeongsi(廷試, a special exam taken inside the palace) and byeolsi(別試, an exam taken to celebrate a special day) scenes. In particular, paintings about sogwa(小科) sites in the 19th century contain the scenes of cheating sometimes, so this provides the clue with which we can see the society of the time. Paintings about jeongsi and byeolsi contain the sites of mun-mu gwa(文武官) taken in both the capital and the country. These are the examples of documentary paintings to be reported to the court or central government office. Second, the scenes of events for Gwageo such as bangbang(放榜, a rite to announce those who have passed Gwageo), eunyeongyeon(恩榮宴, a celebrating event for those who have passed Gwageo), and yuga(遊街, a march of those who have passed Gwageo) were drawn as documentary paintings. Those paintings show us the features of the sites or places where the rites and events were held or the details of feasts. As they are documentary paintings, they are faithful to recording the main scenes of events and also the spatial background around it onto the picture. Third, these are the documentary paintings about dongbang(同榜, those passing the same session of Gwageo) and sigwan(試官, a supervisor of Gwageo). Paintings in the form of gyehoedo mostly correspond to this category. Those passing the same session of Gwageo drew banghoedo(榜會圖) for celebration regarding their success together as a good tie. It was not a gathering of all passing the same session of Gwageo, but it was characterized by their encountering from the same region or by difference chances. Paintings for Gwageo that have been examined above are the materials with which we can see diverse aspects of Gwageo in Joseon concretely. And they are the property that considerably complements visual aspects in research on Gwageo culture and are the area that requires continuous research.
