조선후기 科擧에 대한 心理의 一面

국문 초록

16세기를 전후하여 科擧는 관직진출을 위한 보편적인 제도로 자리 잡았다. 이 때문에 과거 시험의 경쟁률이 높아지면서 부정과 부패가 만연하기 시작하였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 생계를 위한 방편, 양반으로서의 신분 유지, 應試 및 及第에 따른 이익 기대 등의 이유로 과거 응시자는 기하급수적으로 늘어났다. 특히 18∼19세기에는 응시자의 증가에 따른 총체적 부정이 발생하면서 인재 선발 제도로서의 기능이 거의 상실되었다. 응시자는 많고 과거시험은 公的機能을 상실하였기 때문에, 사람들의 심리와 행동에 변화가 발생하는 것은 필연이다. 그 결과 정상적인 절차와 과정보다는 運命的 思惟와 僥倖心에 기대는 경향이 나타났다. 그리하여 개인의 능력이나 노력보다는 근거 없는 俗說의 遵信 및 科夢에 의지한 요행심리가 작용하였다. 급제 여부는 개인의 능력과 별개인 운명의 소관이라는 인식이 자리 잡아 간 것이다. 요행과 숙명의 심리는, 새로운 삶의 이정표가 없는 비생산적인 사회 현실을 견뎌야 하는 사람들이 만들어낸 부득이한 감성의 표출이라 할 수 있다. 요행과 숙명으로 요약되는 과거에 대한 심리는 조선후기라는 특정한 역사ㆍ사회의 불편한 현실에서 발생한 결과이다.

영문 초록

Gwageo or the highest-level state examination around the 16th century had settled down as a universal system to advance to government posts in the late Chosun Dynasty. Corruptions were widespread as competition got more heated for the examination. Nonetheless, the number of the applicants had grown exponentially for several reasons such as a means of living and maintaining the social status as Yangban (aristocrat), and the expectation of benefit from application for and passing it. Especially in the 18th and 19th century, asthecorruption came to the climax due to such increased number of the applicants, the civil servant examination almost lost its original role of recurring human assets. Since there were too many applicants and the screening system lost its public functions, it was inevitable that change occurred in people's psychology and behavior. As a result, the people came to possess fatalistic thinking and trusted to luck rather than followed a normal route and process. They blindly relied on groundless public belief and luck of passing the examination rather than on personal capability and efforts. Namely, psychology had taken place that passing it had nothing to do with personal competence but something with destiny. Therefore, it can be said that the psychology of luck and destiny was the inevitable expression of their emotion with the reality of the unproductive society without milestone for life. The psychology of the state examination, which was characterized with reliance on luck and destiny, is the by-product from the uncomfortable reality of a certain history and society of the late Chosun Dynasty.
