국문 초록

이 연구는 조선조의 과거제도(선발체제)와 교육제도(양성체제), 그리고 이 양자 간의 관계 및 그 문명사적 의의를 고찰한 것이다. 우선, 조선조에는 기본적으로 학교에 적을 두고 있으면서 성실하게 학업을 수행한 자에 한해서 공직자 임용을 위한 과거에 나아갈 수 있도록 함으로써 교육체제의 기반이 단단해 질 수 있도록 하였다. 둘째, 이러한 양성ㆍ선발 체제는 공민권자라고 볼 수 없는 천민을 제외하고는 전 인민을 대상으로 하고 전국을 망라한 것이었으며, 당사자의 덕성과 재능에 따라 일정 수준 이상의 실력을 갖췄다고 공인된 자라면 과거에 도전하는 데에 법제적 제약이 없었다. 셋째, 공직자 임용을 위한 과거제도는 매우 엄격하게 시행되었으며 공정성을 제고하는 데에 충실하였다. 응시자의 실력을 평가하는 데에 사사로운 인정이 개입되는 것을 가급적 차단하고자 했으며 상당히 까다로운 절차와 방식에 따라 합격자가 선정되었다. 이러한 사실들은 조선조의 과거제도와 교육제도가 긴밀하게 연결되어 있었으며 상호작용하며 유지되고 있었다는 점을 보여준다. 즉 양자는 서로 돕는 관계에 있으면서 발전해 왔다고 볼 수 있다. 이 양대 체제가 조선조 500년의 지속을 가능케 했다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 조선조의 과거제도와 교육제도에 대한 종래의 통념에 대한 반성적 검토, 나아가 이에 대한 재인식이 필요하다. 혈통적 세습에 의해서가 아니라 본인 당사자의 교육적 성취와 사회적으로 발현해 내는 능력에 따라 합리적으로 사회적 얼개가 갖춰지는 삶에 필수적인 체제를 조성하고 실천했던 조선조사회에 대한 부당한 평가를 정돈하고 처리하지 않으면 안 된다. 이는 과거사를 다루는 일이라기보다는 현금 대한민국의 자화상을 일그러짐 없이 명확히 그리는 데에, 나아가 앞으로 우리가 추구하고 지켜야 할 바를 굳게 정하는 데에 구체적으로 작용할 현재의 일이기 때문이다.

영문 초록

In this study, I interpret the system of state examination and public education in Chosen Dynasty. And I try to show the intimate relation between them and its socio-cultural significance. First of all, only the industrious learners of public schools had the right to take the state employment examination for government service appointment. This rule made it possible to establish the strong foundation of public education system. Second of all, this opportunity to be a member of government service was open to any citizen whose ability officially approved to take this examination according to one's own virtue and talent. Third of all, the process of this state employment examination was so strict and faire. It's precise method of selection depended upon the careful evaluation. All these facts on the state employment examination and public education show that the system of these two elements in Chosen Dynasty had been in close relation and interactive operation. In Chosen Dynasty, there was a reciprocal assistance between the state examination system and the public education system; and these two systems had been making advancement in the process of cooperation and corelation. Without the organic and stable existence of these systems, five hundred years duration of the Chosen Dynasty could not be possible. It is necessary to have reflective comprehensions on these two systems and their close relation in Chosen Dynasty. There is no reason to follow the irrelevant arguments and the colonial view of japan scholars. The socio-cultural significance of these two systems and their connection is that they can make us possible to make rational society not by hereditary succession but by our own educational achievements and functional abilities for practical society.
