국문 초록

일본 근현대미술에서 ‘서양 근대의 극복’이 지상과제로 설정된 이래 그 과제를 달성한 것으로 평가받는 모노파는 ‘모노’를 위주로 한 새로운 조형의 세계를 제시하였다. 모노파 미술에서는 ‘material’, ‘object’, ‘thingness’ 등으로 번역되는 ‘모노’와 함께 ‘만들지 않기’, ‘관상觀想’, ‘만남’ 등이 중요한 개념으로 주목을 받아왔지만, 그것들과 함께 또 하나 중요한 개념이 ‘장소’다. 모노파의 이론가이면서 작가이기도 한 이우환의 만남미술론이나 스가 기시오管木志雄의 조형이념 등에 드러나 있는 ‘장소’ 개념은 ‘있는 그대로의 세계’를 이해하게 해주고 직접적인 현상광경을 지각할 수 있게 해주는 ‘특정한 장소’로서, 인간의 자립을 제일의적인 것으로 설정한 서양 근대 철학의 ‘주체’나 ‘의식’과 대립관계에 있다. 그들의 ‘장소’ 개념은 니시다 기타로西田幾多郞의 ‘장소’ 개념에서 유래한 것으로 미술 분야의 ‘서양 근대 극복’ 혹은 ‘근대 초극’의 중요한 축을 이룬다.

영문 초록

Mono-ha is considered to have accomplished the primary task of modern and contemporary Japanese art by overcoming Western Modernism, and introduced new kinds of forms using “mono,” a concept frequently translated as “material,” “object,” or “thingness.” While such concepts as “mono,” “not to make,” “contemplation,” and “encounter” drew attention as the core elements of the art of Mono-ha, “place” was given as much importance by the Mono-ha artists. The “specific place” appearing in the theory of “Art of Encounter” by Mono-ha theorist and artist Lee Ufan as well as in the philosophy behind the works of Suga Kishio菅木志雄 allows the viewer to understand the world as it is and perceive the phenomena directly, making a sharp contrast with “subject” or “consciousness” of modern Western philosophy whose primary concern is self-subsistence of human beings. The place in the art of Mono-ha originating from the theory of “place” of Nishida Kitaro西田幾多郞 played a significant role in two artists’ attempts to overcome Western Modernism or Trans–Modernity.
