국문 초록

단색조 회화는 1970년대 한국 현대미술의 대표적인 성과로 평가된다. 그간 자세히 밝혀지지 않았던 단색조 회화의 성립과 전개과정을 살펴봄으로써 ‘한국적 모더니즘Korean Modernism’이라는 명제를 지배하고 있는 구조적 모순을 살펴볼 수 있다. 단색조 회화는 전후 미국을 중심으로 한 국제질서의 재편 과정에 식민과 분단, 전쟁의 혼란을 딛고 본격적인 산업화에 박차를 가하던 한국 사회의 열망과 모순적인 현실이 일구어 낸 성과라고 할 수 있다. 박정희 정부에 의한 강력한 ‘조국 근대화’ 프로젝트는 한국 미술의 근대화를 추상의 이름으로 추동하는 기반이 되었으며, 1965년 이후 재개된 일본과의 교류는 단색조 회화의 창작과 미학적 담론이 ‘한국적 모더니즘’으로 수렴되는 중요한 매개변수로 작용했다. 이 시기 박서보Park Seo-Bo와 이우환Lee UFan은 한국과 일본을 오가며 단색조 회화가 탄생하고 번성하는데 중추적인 역할을 했다. 쇄도하는 서구식 근대화에 대응하여 동양인 또는 한국인으로서의 정체성을 일깨운 이들의 시대적 자각과 예술적 실천은 정치적 식민의 종식 이후 여전히 지배적인 경제적 문화적 후기 식민의 상황에 대처한 후발 산업국가 예술인의 대응이었다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Korean monochrome painting called dansaekhwa is considered one of the significant achievements of Korean painting of the 1970s. A closer look into the formation and development of dansaekhwa, which has not thus far been clearly illuminated, reveals the contradiction inherent in Korean Modernism. Dansaekhwa resulted from the specific situation of the Korean society where the reality of life contradicted the aspirations of the people who tried to spur the industrialization out of the chaos of successive tragedies - the colonialization, division of the territory and the Korean War - in the midst of the post-war reorganization of the world order led by the United States. The modernization of the nation pursued by the Park Chung-hee government laid a foundation for the modernization of Korean art in the form of abstraction, and the resumed cultural exchanges with Japan following the normalization of the bilateral diplomatic ties in 1965 allowed the creation of and the aesthetics on dansaekhwa constitute parts of Korean Modernism. In the 1970s, Park Seobo and Lee Ufan, who worked in both Korea and Japan, played core roles in the birth and development of dansaekhwa. With awareness of the times and artistic practices, the two artists aroused the Asian and Korean identities in reaction to the rush of Western modernization, as being the artists of a developing country which remained colonialized economically and culturally even after the end of political occupation.
