장소 특정적 미술은 어떻게 가능했는가?

국문 초록

장소성의 개념을 한정된 물리적 공간을 가리키는 것으로 제한할 때, 장소 특정적 작업은 거칠게 ‘지금, 여기’에서 경험될 수 있는 미술 정도로 요약될 수 있다. 이때 이러한 미술 작품은 본질적으로 회화처럼 다양한 사람들이 감상할 수 있는 것들이 아니며, 그들에게서 동일한 반응을 유도해 낼 수도 없다는 한계를 지니게 된다. 그러나 많은 사람들은 장소성과 관련된 현대미술 작품들을 알고 있고, 또 (책으로든 웹사이트를 통해서든) 보고 있다. 장소성이라는 덫에 발이 묶인 미술작품이 많은 사람들에게 공유되는 모순적 상황에 놓이는 것이다. 따라서 이 글은 이러한 모순이 어떻게 가능할 수 있는가에 대한 원인을 사진을 비롯한 기술적 재현 수단들의 특성을 통해 찾고자 한다. 이를 위해 19세기 후반과 20세기 초 사진이 어떻게 대상들로 하여금 장소성을 박탈하여 그것을 예술작품으로 변질시켰는지, 또 20세기 중반에 이르러 그것이 어떻게 미술에 장소성을 복권시켰는지 등 사진에 의한 장소 특정적 미술의 ‘외적’ 동인을 추적해 봤다.

영문 초록

When the concept of siteness is limited to a confined physical space, site-specific art works could be summarized roughly as the art that could be experienced ‘here and now.’ Unlike paintings, in this regard, this kind of art works is not only able to be shown by a variety of people inherently, but also has a limitation that it can’t induce the same response from them. However, many people know about contemporary art works that are related to siteness and see them (through books or websites). In other words, art works caught in a trap of siteness are placed in the inconsistent situation as many people can share them. Therefore, this study aims to find out the ground for the possibility of this kind of contradiction through out examining the characteristics of technical representation tools including photography. In the pursuit of this purpose, this study explored how late 19th and early 20th photography converted objects into art works as it deprived them of siteness. Furthermore, this study tried to demonstrate how photography reinstated the siteness for the art in the mid 20th century again, and traced the ‘external’ motive of site-specific art relying on photography.
