경향점수를 활용한 남녀공학 효과 분석

국문 초록

본 연구는 한국교육종단연구(KELS) 3~6차 자료를 이용하여 일반계 고등학생 학업성취도에 미치는 남녀공학 효과를 실증적으로 분석하였다. 실험연구에서는 무선할당을 통해 처치집단과 통제집단의 사전 동등성을 확보할 수 있기 때문에 두 집단을 비교하여 처치에 대한 인과효과를 분석하는 것이 가능하다. 그러나 관찰연구에서는 기존에 존재하는 집단을 분석 대상으로 사용하기 때문에 일반적으로 두 집단의 사전특성이 다르게 나타나며 이에 두 집단을 단순 비교하여 인과효과를 분석하는 것이 어려워진다. 본 연구에서는 이와 같은 문제를 극복하기 위해 경향점수(Propensity Score)를 활용하였다. 경향점수를 통해 동일한 사전 변인 분포를 갖도록 남녀공학과 단성학교 학생들을 구성하였으며, 선형 성장모형을 사용하여 학교 성별에 따른 학업성취도 차이가 나타나는지, 학업성취도 변화에 있어서 남녀공학이 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 살펴보았다. 분석 결과, 남학생의 경우 언어, 외국어 향상도에서 집단 간 차이가 나타나고 있었는데, 시간이 지남에 따라 단성학교 성취도는 향상되고 있는 반면 남녀공학은 감소하고 있었다. 여학생의 경우 언어 영역 향상도에서 남녀공학이 단성학교에 비해 성취도가 더 많이 감소하고 있었으며 그 차이는 통계적으로 유의했다.

영문 초록

This study aims to analyze the educational effects of coeducational schools focusing on the academic high school students. The experimental study was able to acquire the prior equivalence of treatment and control group by random assignment. So it is possible to analyze the causal effect of treatment by simply comparing two groups. The observational study, which is usually not allowed to be assigned randomly, considers existing groups as the subjects of analysis and as a result, the prior characteristics of those groups appear differently in most cases. That means these kinds of studies will be difficult to investigate the causal effect of treatment with simple comparison. Therefore in this study, we have determined to apply a propensity score in order to overcome the limitations and by using linear growth model, we analyzed how a coeducational school affects their academic achievement. The study found that the coeducational school had negative effects on the boys' Korean and English subjects and the girls' Korean subject. Both groups of boys in unequalized areas achieved such a different result in both Korean and English subject improvement. As time goes on, single-sex schools were enhanced but coeducational schools declined. For girls in an equalized area, there were different rates of Korean subject improvement. Coeducational schools made less improvement than single-sex schools. In unequalized area, however, there was no difference between Korean and English subjects between both schools.
