방과후 초등학교 수준별 영어학습 참여의 효과

국문 초록

본 논문은 방과후 초등학교 수준별 영어학습 참여에 대한 효과를 연구하였다. 방과후학교의 내실화를 기하기 위해 지역자치제와 대학이 협력해 2009-2011동안 원어민영어교사를 활용해 414명의 초등학생들을 대상으로 영어 프로그램을 운영하였다. 수준에 따라 세 개의 집단(상위집단/중간집단/하위집단)으로 구분해 원어민-내국인 영어수업 참여의 효과에 대해 분석하였다. 학생들의 영어 의사소통 능력의 향상 정도를 평가하기위해 사전-사후테스트를 실시하여 t분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과 방과후 수준별 영어 수업은 상위집단과 하위집단 학습자들의 영어 의사소통 능력을 향상 시키는데 긍정적인 효과를 보여주었다. 그러나 중간집단의 학습자들에게는 상위와 하위집단 만큼의 효과는 나타나지 않았다. 언어 기능별로 듣기, 말하기는 세그룹에서 모두 향상되었으나 읽기는 중간과 하위그룹에게 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 수업과 교사에 대한 설문지에서 학생들은 원어민과 내국인 교사들의 다른 역할에 만족도를 보였다. 연구결과 원어민-내국인을 활용한 방과후 수준별 영어 수업이 초등학생들에게 긍정적인 영향을 주고 있다고 분석되었다.

영문 초록

This study aims to explore the effectsof a proficiency-leveled after-school English program for elementary students that are supported by the local government. The after-school English program was conducted to improve the communicative language abilities for 414 elementary students during the years 2009-2011. The pre and post-language achievement test was performed to examine the effectiveness of the three different language proficiency levels (upper, intermediate, and lower) in the after-school English program. A questionnaire was also administered to examine the background variables of students'responses to the leveled language program with Korean teachers and native English speaker teachers. The result showed that the program improved the students' speaking, listening and reading skills in the upper level group. It also improvedthe students' listening and speaking skills in the intermediate and the lower-level group, but not reading skills. The students' satisfaction with the program and its teachers were shown to affect their perceptions of their English improvement. The findings showed that the proficiency-leveled after-school English program had positive effects on improving elementary students' English ability.
