국문 초록

황순원과 김동리, 이 두 문인의 존재성도 근대라는 의미 차원의 문제를 넘어서 생각할 수 없다. 여기에서 한 가지 흥미로운 것은 이 두 작가 모두 무속(샤머니즘)을 근대의 논의의 중심에 놓고 있다는 점이다. 이 고민의 결과가 바로 ‘유랑민 근성’과 ‘구경적 생의 형식’이다. 이미 오랜 역사적인 뿌리를 지니고 있는 유랑민 근성은 무속의 한 속성이지만 그것은 비단 무속에만 있는 것이 아니라 기독교에도 있다는 것이 황순원의 판단이다. 그가 생각하는 이상적인 근대란 유랑민 근성을 버리는 것, 다시 말하면 주체성과 자율성에 입각해 진정한 세계에 정착하는 것을 의미한다. 김동리의 근대에 대한 접근은 유랑민 근성보다는 구경적 생의 형식으로 드러난다. 이 관점에서 보면 무속은 구경적 생의 형식의 대표적인 것이며, 이것을 밀고나가는 것이야말로 서구적인 근대와 맞서 싸울 수 있는 자신만의 방식이라는 것을 그는 알고 있었던 것이다. 근대의 비극성을 환기하기보다는 그것을 초극하려고 한 그의 사상은 근대에 제기된 조선적인 것 혹은 동양주의적인 것의 의미를 성찰하는데 일정한 계기를 제공한다. 이들이 제기한 유랑민 근성과 구경적 생의 형식이 특수하면서도 보편적인 의미를 획득하고 있다면 그것은 아마 이러한 이유 때문일 것이다. 유랑민 근성이 야기한 비극과 구경적 생의 형식이 야기한 초극은 비단 근대뿐만 아니라 근대 이후에도 우리 인간의 한 존재 방식으로 남아 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Existence of two writers, Hwang Sun-Won and Kim Dong-Ni, is closely related to the significance of modernity. It is interesting that the both writers thought the shamanism was important for the argument about modernity. The thought results in ‘nature of nomads’, and ‘form of life, digging into situation’. The nature of nomads with long history is one of the shamanistic attributes. However Hwang Sun-Won judged it was not only in shamanism, but also in Protestantism. His ideal modernity is giving up the nature of nomads. In other words, it means to settle down in real world with subjectivity and autonomy. Kim Dong-Ni approached the modernity with the form of life, digging into situation. In this point of view the shamanism is the typical form of that kind of life, digging into situation. And he knew that it was his own way to push for the life in order to fight against western modernity. He tried to overcome tragic modernity, not just awaken the people. This idea of his offered the chance to reflect the nature of Joseon or meaning of Orientalism. The nature of nomads and the form of life, digging into situation, they brought, have special and universal meaning. That’s why the tragedy resulted from the nature of nomads and the overcoming resulted from the form of life, digging into situation are still left as a lifestyle of human in modern times and post modern times, too.
