국문 초록

월사는 조선 종기 사대가 가운데 가장 많은 만시를 남겼다. 만시는 죽음이라는 주제를 다루기 때문에 의례적이거나 상투적인 면모를 벗어나기 어렵다. 월사의 만시를 살펴 볼 때 월사도 이러한 문제를 다분히 의식했던 것을 알 수 있다. 월사는 이러한 문제를 극복하기 위하여 만시에서 망자와의 관계를 부각시켰다. 월사의 만시 도입부에 단순한 소개를 넘어 많은 부분을 할애하여 그와의 인연을 소개하는데 치중했다. 대대로 인연을 맺은 집안의 지인과의 관계는 물론 약포 이해수와의 관계처럼 일면식인 경우에도 그 사실을 기록하여 만시에 언제나 진심을 담고자 노력하였다. 죽음에 대해서도 천편일률적인 슬픔만을 묘사하지 않고 수복을 누린 사람에게는 부러움을, 안타까운 죽음 앞에서는 삶보다 나은 죽음을 언급하여 망자를 위로하였다. 월사는 만시의 수만큼이나 다양한 죽음 앞에 夭壽보다 가치있는 삶을 산 것이 중요하다며 죽음에 여러 의미를 부여했다. 소외받고 안타까운 삶을 살았던 이의 죽음 앞에서 월사가 할 수 있는 것은 비록 그의 삶이 헛되지 않았음을 인정해주는 일이었다. 망자가 힘들고 어려운 삶을 살았을수록 월사의 만시는 길어지며 슬픔의 농도는 더욱 짙어져 갔다. 망자가 두려워하는 존재의 소멸과 잊혀짐에 대한 위로의 방식으로 사소한 에피소드 하나도 기억하여 그를 추억했다. 월사는 망자와의 공유했던 순간을 기억해 주고 그 시간은 지나갔지만 아직도 그 공간에 홀로 남아서 망자를 기억하고 슬퍼하고 있다고 확인시켜주었다. 월사의 만시에 보이는 이러한 방식은 의례적이고 상투적이라는 평을 받는 만시에 망자와의 개별적이고도 특별한 사연을 표출하여 그 슬픔의 진정성을 드러내고, 소외된 사람들에 대한 관심과 인정은 망자를 위로하려는 월시의 노력에서 나온 것이다. 그러고 이러한 방식은 후대의 만시에 재현되어 하나의 전범이 되었다.

영문 초록

Wolsa left the most monodies out of the 4 great scholars of Chinese classics in the middle of the Joseon Dynasty. A Monody deals with the theme of death, so it is hard to be free from the formal or conventional aspect. It’s generally believed that Wolsa was also quite conscious of such a problem. Wolsa highlighted the relations with the deceased in an effort to overcome such a problem, Wolsa concentrated on introducing his fateful relationship with the deceased by devoting a generous portion to the introduction of his monodies beyond a level of simple introduction. Even in case of Yakpo Lee, Hae-su whom he met only once, Wolsa made efforts to show his true feelings in his monodies all the time by recording the fact. Even regarding death, Wolsa didn’t describe just the same old grief but paid condolences to the deceased by commenting on his envious feelings toward the deceased who enjoyed longevity and good fortune while commenting on the death better than life for the pitiable death of the deceased. Wolsa gave several meanings to death before various deaths up to the number of Wolsa’s condolatory poems while saying that it’s more important to live a life of value than to enjoy living one’s full span of life. What he could do before the deceased, who lived an isolated, pitiable life, was acknowledge that the late person’s life was not in vain at all. The more strenuous and rough life the late person lived, the longer Wolsa’s monody became and the heavier the concentration of his grief over the deceased grew. Wolsa was reminiscent of the late person by recalling even a trivial episode of the deceased by means of consolation to the extinction of existence and obscurity of which the late person was afraid. Wolsa remembered the moment of sharing with the late person, and got the late person to confirm that Wolsa still remained at that space remembering the late person and grieving the loss of the deceased even though the time to share together was already gone. Such a turn of phrase shown in Wolsa’s consolatory poetry, in the light of a monody which was generally considered to be formal and conventional at that time, exposed Wolsa’s authenticity of grief by expressing a case-by-case and special story with the late person; in addition, Wolsa’s interest in and acknowledgement of the isolated people were derived from Wolsa’s efforts to console the deceased. Such a monody-creating method was reproduced in a monody of later generations to become a paradigm.
