As dialogue between the present and the past, history is basically communication. Communication needs media. Media are decisive to historical communication as dialogue between the present and the past, just like Marshall McLuhan said that "media are message."
Since Herodotos, the author of Historia and the father of history, history began as literal history. With the end of Gutenberg's era and the emergence of electric age, history as literal history faces a crisis. Taking this as a departure point, this paper steps out of a framework focused upon the conventional perspective of literal history and reflects on historiography in the context of history of media.
In human history, every age has its own dominant media. The history of human civilization has been a evolutionary history of media, with human beings producing, delivering and using knowledge. Following the change in communicational relationship in line with media's development, McLuhan classified human history
into archaic tribal age, literal age, printing age and electric age.
Following the same media-historical periodization, history of historiography can also be divided into narrative history, literal history, printing history, visual history.
History as dialogue between the present and the past is, strictly speaking, unrealistic dialogue of dream. Whereas oral history based upon face-to-face communication using senses had delivered 'mythical' history through verbal words, literal history delivered written history based on research of the rationally communicable
past, not the myth. Printing history in the age of Gutenberg converted history into science based upon literary-communicational relationship. In result, historical imagination enabling dialogue of dream was banished to the field of literature like historical novel, and only history of reality was acknowledged to be the object of
serious historical scholarship. However, in electric age, literal history steps down and historical drama as dreaming history flourishes with the rise of visual history.
At present, history stands at the crossroads. History's survival hinges on wether history could change its identity as literal history in accordance with the epochal condition of 'turn of media.' History can evolve in academic sense, without degrading to a discipline which needs protection or is redundant, only when historians are ready not to reject visual history, but to accommodate it as 'dreaming history' compensating the deficiency of 'history of reality.' After all, history "should change, in order not to change."
