국문 초록

이 글은 남해지역의 이성계 전설을 중심으로 그 전승 양상과 민중적 지향을 살핀 것이다. 남해지역 이성계 전설의 두드러진 특징으로는 이태조기단(李太祖祈壇)과 연결된 금산(錦山) 전설의 활발한 전승을 들 수 있다. 이것은 삶의 터전에 대한 지역민들의 애착이 구비전승물을 통해 발현된 것이라 할 수 있다. 남해 금산이 전국의 명산(名山)들을 제치고 조선왕조의 기도처로 선택되어 전설로서 널리 전승하게 된 데는 신선사상의 상징인 삼신산(三神山)의 형상화로, 남해가 지닌 지정학적 조건이 그 배경으로 작용했음을 알 수 있다. 또 다른 특징으로는 이성계 전설의 각편들이 여러 유형으로 중첩되어 전승한다는 점인데, 이는 금산 전설의 실재성을 확보하기 위한 방편으로 활용되고 있음을 알 수 있다. 특히 석가세존과 연결되어 있던 기존의 ‘세존도 전설’이 금산 전설과 때를 같이하여 인물의 교체를 통해 변이함으로써 이성계 전설로 편입되고 있다는 점은 주목할 만하다. 이러한 전승적 특징은 영향력 있는 유명 인물을 지역전설 속에 끌어들임으로써 지역전설이 공간적 한계를 넘어 널리 전파될 수 있는 계기를 마련하고, 이를 통해 지역적 고립성을 극복함과 동시에 정체성을 확보하려는 일련의 노력이었다고 볼 수 있다. 그 결과 남해 금산을 배경으로 한 이성계 전설은 지역적 경계를 허물고 외부로 전승될 수 있었다. 그러나 외부로 전파되었던 금산 전설은 새로운 시대의 도래로 인해 인물에 대한 구심점을 잃게 되자 전승의 의미를 상실하였다. 하지만 남해지역에서는 장소에 대한 정서와 애착으로 오히려 더 활발한 전승을 보이며 대표적인 지역전설로 자리 잡을 수 있게 되었다.

영문 초록

This study focuses on the aspects of transmission and the orientation of the people focusing on the legend of Lee Seong-gye. The distinctive feature of the legend of Lee Seong-gye in Namhae district is the active transmission of the legend of Geumsan related to Itaejogidan, which is the mound Lee Seong-gye prayed. It is possible to say that the attachment to their livelihood of the local people is expressed by oral heritages. The background of the reason why Geumsan was selected as the prayer site of the Joseon Dynasty rather than the famous mountains in the whole country and widely spreaded as a legend is partly because of geopolitical condition of Namhae as the projection of Samsinsan, the symbol of Sinseon - Taoist hermit with miraculous power - thought. Another distinctive feature is that the versions of the legend of Lee Seong-gye are transmitted in various types, and that is the way to secure the substantiality of the legend of Geumsan. In particular, it is the point that the existing legend of Sejondo related to Seokgasejon is included in the legend of Lee Seong-gye with the legend of Geumsan, being modified by the replacement of characters. These features are the opportunity that local legend was to widely spread beyond its spatial boundary was obtained by relating a famous person to a local legend, and that was a series of effort to overcome local isolation and secure identity at the same time. As a result, the legend of Lee Seong-gye related to the legend of Geumsan broke down the boundary of an area in a time and spreaded widely. Yet, it seems to lose the significance of transmission as the pivot of character disappeared because of the collapse of the dynasty and the advent of the new era. However In Namhae district, it seems to be the reason of more active transmission and its status as the representative local legend by the emotion and attachment as to place.
