There are various cases of sexual indulgence of kings or royal families in the Age of Three Kingdoms. Some king liked to hear of beautiful women from retainers; some retainer curried favor with the king by introducing him attractive women; some king had illicit affairs with women while travelling in disguise outside the palace or on his way to the palace from hunting; some king tried every means in order to commit fornication with a married woman. Living in a confined space of the palace, the king might have little leisure while living a tedious life of institutionalized rituals, trying to bring order to the confused society, preparing for the war, directing large construction works and coping with natural disasters. Some king even longed for a woman of the common class whom he happened to see while travelling in disguise. Some kings abused his sovereign power and had illicit affairs with women of the common class against his dignity and propriety. Such a sexual indulgence of the king might be due to his excessive works or repugnance to court ladies wearing the same uniform. He might have felt fresh attraction toward women from the common class. Some queen enjoying luxurious life had illicit affairs with the younger brother of the deceased king or a Buddhist monk staying in the palace. For instance, Queen Jinseong had illicit affairs with her uncle Wihong and handsome youths. They were terrible scandals against the dignity and the behavioral code of the royal family. Seohyeon, who was raised to one of the highest official posts in the Kingdom of Silla, committed fornication with Manmyeong, the daughter of King Ipjong and gave birth to Kim Yu-Shin, the most famous general in Silla. Contrarily, some king longed for the deceased queen singlemindedly. King Heungdeok (826-836), the 42nd king of Silla, conferred posthumous honors to the deceased queen (the daughter of 39th king, Soseong) and entitled her Queen Jeongmok. The king was in bitter sorrow and could not forget the deceased queen. Retainers asked the king to remarry, but he declined, “Even the bird sings a sad songs for its dead mate. How can a man remarry forgetting his deceased wife?” He even did not allow court ladies to attend to him. Only eunuchs were allowed to come near him. In accordance with his will he was buried with the queen. He was a good example whose devotion to his wife remained unabated.
