연행록 자료 집성 및 번역의 현황과 과제

국문 초록

본고는 연행록 자료의 집성과 그 번역에 대한 현황을 살펴 지금까지 이룩한 성과와 남은 과제를 분석하고 파악한 것이다. 연행록 자료의 집성은 조선말기 김창업ㆍ홍대용ㆍ박지원의 연행록을 함께 수록한 『燕彙』부터 시작해서 1960년대 『연행록선집』, 그리고 최근 임기중의 『燕行錄全集』과 그 속집까지 꾸준히 이루어져, 자료 발굴 및 수집 망라 차원에서만큼은 대단한 성과를 축적하였다. 이에 비해 연행록 자료의 번역은 자료 집성의 속도와 양을 따르지 못하고 있는 실정이다. 비교적 다양한 방식으로 번역물들이 쌓이면서, 어떤 자료는 오랜 기간 동안 거듭 새롭게 번역되는 과정에서 중복된 성과를 또 어떤 자료는 문집에 수록된 형태로 문집 번역에 포함되어 그 성과를 쌓고 있다. 이러한 성과들의 종합해서 고려하면 연행록 자료의 번역 성과도 결코 적지만은 않다고 할 것이다. 그러나 이렇게 축적된 집성자료들과 번역물들은 그 혁혁한 성과에도 불구하고 일정한 한계를 노정함으로써 마지막 완성 단계로 완전하게 진입하지 못하고 있다. 3장에서 기존 연행록 집성자료의 정리체계와 한계 그리고 번역과의 연계성을 논의한 것은 바로 이 때문이다. 연행록 자료 수집의 완결 단계에 임박해 있으면서도, 몇 가지 한계로 인해 일부에서는 활용성에 대해 지속적인 의문을 제기한다. 특히 기록 전승을 간과한 자료 구분의 모호함과 이본 대교 및 선본 선별의 소홀함을 주요한 한계점으로 지적할 수 있는데, 이 때문에 연행록 자료의 물량을 정확하게 파악하기가 쉽지 않고 자료집성의 정리체계에도 불균형이 생겼다. 결국 현재 집성 체계로는 번역작업과의 연계성을 추구하기가 쉽지 않아 보였다. 본고가 연행록 자료 집성 및 번역의 현황을 살펴보고 그 과제를 검토한 것은 단순히 연구 편의적 발상의 자료 정리와 번역 성과를 추구하려 한 것이 아니다. 기록유산이 연구자에게는 일방적 연구 대상일 뿐이지만, 전문자료의 집성은 학술적 사회적 문화적 등등 여러 가지 방면에서 활용도를 고려할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 활용자의 범위도 더욱 넓어질 수 있다. 이러한 점에서 연행록 자료 집성은 지식정보화 시대에 걸맞게 새로운 형태로 거듭날 수 있을 것으로 판단되었다. 동시에 이러한 과정에서 폐쇄적이고 현학적인 학문 풍토가 쇄신될 수 있으리란 기대도 생겼다. 다만 이러한 한문 자료들의 활용성을 가능하게 하려면 번역 작업이 함께 병행되어야 한다.

영문 초록

This report is figured out and analyzed rest of work that achieved by now by studying the collection of Yon-Haeng-Rok materials and the present condition of the translation of it. The collection of Yon-Haeng-Rok materials have started from 『Yon-Hwi(燕彙)』that contains the Yon-Haeng-Rok of Kim Chang-Up, Hong Dae-Yong, and Park Ji-Won and have constantly gatherd from 『Yon-Haeng-Rok-Sun-Jip』 of 1960s and from Im Gi-Joong’s 『Yon-Haeng-Rok-Jun-Jip(燕行錄全集)』, and it has accumulated huge achievements in excavation and collection of the materials. In comparison, the translation of Yon-Haeng-Rok materials have not reached to the speed and quantities of collecting the materials. By accumulating the translation in relatively various ways, some materials have reached to the overlapped achievement in the newly translated process for a long time, and other materials have reached to the achievement in containing. In consideration of these achievements, it cannot be said that the achievement of translation of Yon-Haeng-Rok is little. Although the achievement of the accumulated materials and translations is brilliant, it cannot totally enter to the final completion process by exposing the fixed limitation. This is the reason why the Chapter 3 is discussing about the organizing system and limitation of the existing collected materials of Yon-Haeng-Rok and its connectivity with the translation. Even though it is close at the final step of collection of Yon-Haeng-Rok materials, a portion of group still poses a question about the capability because of the several limitations. Especially, the obscurity of classification of materials that overlook the record transmission and the negligence of comparison of different version and the previous version selection could be the major limitations. Because of these limitations, it is hard to grasp the exact amount of Yon-Haeng-Rok materials and it occurs the imbalance in the organizing system of collecting the materials. After all, it seems that it is hard to pursue the connectivity with the translating process in the current collection system. The examining the projects and searching the collection of materials and current condition of the translation are not the only reason to pursue the achievement of the translation and the material organization for the convenient learning idea. Although the recorded inheritance is the unilateral object of study to the researchers, the collection of professional materials not only can consider the better use in various ways such as academic, social, and cultural ways and so on, but also can become wider the range of users. In this point of view, it can be judged that the collection of Yon-Haeng-Rok materials can be reformed to the new form that is suitable for the knowledge-information age. At the same time, it could expect the renovation of closed and pedantic learning environment through these process. It should carry out the translation process together to make the capabilities of these Chineses characters' materials possible.
