국문 초록

계남 최숙민은 한말의 경상도 하동 옥종을 중심으로 활동했던, 경상우도 노사학파의 대표적 인물이다. 그는 일생 출사하지 않고 거주지인 옥종과 인근지역에서 강학과 기행 등을 통해 자신의 학문적 성취를 완성해 갔던 인물이다. 본고는 그러한 최숙민의 기행시에 주안하여 살펴 본 글이다. 최숙민이 유람했던 곳을 살펴보면, 하동을 중심으로 全방위 인근의 명승은 낱낱이 둘러보았다. 산청.진주.함양.거창.합천은 물론이고 남해.구례 등을 모두 유람하였고, 멀리 속리산.천마산을 거쳐 삼각산 등 한양일대를 유람하고, 송도를 넘어 금강산까지 두루 그의 발길이 닿아 있다. 그리고 가는 곳마다 시를 남겼다. 최숙민의 기행시에는 강우학자로서의 지역 명승에 대한 자긍심과 선현에 대한 존모의식이 뚜렷이 나타난다. 인근지역의 명승을 여러 차례 탐방함으로써 시를 통해 세상에 드러내고, 알려지지 않은 유적은 細註 형식을 통해 기록으로 남기려 하였으며, 나아가 유람지에서 접한 선현의 삶과 처세 등을 읊음으로써 그들에 대한 존모의식과 함께 자기 시대의 指南으로 삼으려 하였다. 뿐만 아니라 최숙민은 한말 강우지역에서 일었던 당색과 학맥을 초월한 학문적 유연성을 그의 기행시에 표출하고 있다. 이는 인근지역의 명승이나 원거리 유람에서 상이한 성향의 문인들과 강학하고 교유하는 방식을 통해 표현하였다. 이렇듯 다양한 세계를 보여주는 그의 유람은 궁극적으로 단순한 산수유람이 아니라 학문과정의 연장선상에서 이해할 수 있으며, 산수자연은 바로 그의 강학 공간이자 구도의 장소였음을 확인할 수 있다. 따라서 최숙민의 기행시는 한말 강우학자로서의 그의 학문성향과 위치를 자리매김하는데 중요한 자료라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Gyenam Choi Suk-min was one of the representative figures of the Nosahakpa in Gyeongsangwoodo, engaging in activities mainly in Hadong Okjong, Gyeongsang Province in late Joseon. He never went into government service and fulfilled his academic achievements through academic study and traveling in Okjong where he had principal residence and in its neighboring areas. This study presents an investigation into his travel poetry. A look at the places he traveled tells that he thoroughly visited scenic spots in all directions of Hadong. His travel encompassed distant Mt. Sokri and Cheonma, Mt. Samgak, and farther Hanyang let alone Sancheong, Jinju, Hamyang, Geochang, Hapcheon, Namhae, and Gurye. He even traveled to Mt. Geumgang past Songdo. He wrote a poem every place he traveled. His travel poetry clearly presents his pride in local scenic spots as a Gangwoo scholar and his respect and admiration for ancient sages. He used his poetry to introduce scenic spots in the neighboring areas he visited several times to the world, tried to leave unknown relics in records through detailed notes, and wrote poems about the lives and lifestyles of the ancient sages he met on the course of traveling to exhibit his respect and admiration for them and find a compass in them for his contemporary times. In addition, he demonstrated his academic flexibility, which transcended the partisan and academic connections that were prevalent in the Gangwoo region in late Joseon, in his travel poems by pursuing academic study and exchange with the literary figures of completely different tendencies from him while traveling scenic spots in the neighboring areas and distant ones. His journeys presenting diverse worlds can be ultimately understood in line with his academic process instead of mere sightseeing of mountains and waters. Nature including mountains and waters was the place where he pursued his academic study and truth. Thus it is safe to say that his travel poems are important materials with which to place his academic tendency and status as a Gangwoo scholar in late Joseon in history.
