茂亭 鄭萬朝의 친일로 가는 思惟

국문 초록

본 논문은 茂亭 鄭萬朝(1858∼1936)의 친일로 가는 사유를 고찰한 것이다. 이에 앞서 그의 저작이나 가계, 사상, 교유 등에 관해서도 간단히 살펴보았다. 무정은 소론계 명문 집안인 동래정씨 가문에서 태어났다. 사상적으로도 양명학에 관심을 지니는 등 주자학적 권위에만 매몰되려 하지 않았다. 그는 沈大允(1806∼1872).姜瑋(1820～1884)의 가르침을 받았고, 李建昌(1852～1898).黃玹(1855～1910).金澤榮(1850～1927).呂圭亨(1849∼1922).鄭寅普(1893～1950년 이후) 등과 교유하기도 하였다. 이들 중에는 20세기 전후 지성계를 이끌며 조선의 독립과 민족의 자존을 지키려고 노력한 인물도 있었고, 무정처럼 친일로 선회했던 인물도 있었다. 무정은 을사오적처럼 천인공노할 만한 친일행위를 한 것은 아니지만, 일본에 협조하고 그들이 주는 벼슬을 받았다. 이에 무정의 삶의 행력을 중심으로 친일로 가는 사유를 단계적으로 점검하게 된 것이다. 무정은 젊은 시절 東道西器의 관점을 견지하고, 자주적 근대화를 추구해야 한다는 입장을 지니고 있었다. 그리고 부패 관리 척결, 균형 있는 인재등용 등을 강조하였다. 이후 김홍집이 이끄는 갑오개혁의 중심에서 활약하기도 하였으나, 그 과정에 친일적 면모를 보였고 시속과 부합하게 되었다. 또한 명성왕후 시해 사건에 연루되어, 전라도 진도에서 12년간 유배의 체험을 겪으면서 더욱더 친일적 성향으로 우회하였다. 해배 후에는 산업화와 군사력을 겸비한 일본의 문명화에 매료되어, 일본을 문명의 모델로 설정하고 추수하고자 하였다. 아울러 '書同文'이라는 사고의 틀로 유학과 한문을 중시하며, 일본과의 공통점을 찾고 연대를 강조하기에 이르렀다. 때문에 그는 친일인사들과 '以文會' 등을 결성하고, 그 성과물을 『매일신보』.『조선문예』등의 매체에 게재하였다. 또한 일본이 창설한 경학원의 부제학과 대제학을 맡고, 『경학원잡지』를 통해 친일유림들과 일본이 강조했던 사회교화론, 유교진흥정책을 선전하고 고양시키는 방면으로 동화.변질되어갔다.

영문 초록

This study is focused on the reason of Moojung Jeong Man-jo's pro-Japanese. Prior to this, I simply reviewed his writings, family, thought, and fellowship. Moojung was born in prestigious Dongrae Jeong Family of Soron party. He did not want to be surrounded by the authority of Neo-Confucianism in thought. He got the teaching of Sim Dae-yun(1806~1872).Gang Wee(1820~1884) and had a academic relationship with Lee Geon-chang(1852~1898).Hwang Hyeon(1855~1910).Kim Taek-young(1850~1927).Yeo Gyu-hyeong(1849~1922).Jeong In-bo(1893~1950?). Among these people, during the 20th century, some led to the independence of Korea and kept the academic self-esteem, the others went wrong to pro-Japanese like Jeong Man-jo. Moojung is not as bad pro-Japaneses as Elsaojuk(乙巳五賊) but he cooperated Japan and took a post in the Japan government. So I studied the step of his pro-Japanese through Moojung's life history. Moojung strongly agreed to the ideology of Dongdoseogi(東道西器) in his young age, kept to the thought of independent-modernization. And he emphasized on the eradication of corrupt officials and balanced recruiting. After that, he had a important role in Gapohgaehyuk(甲午改革) led by Kim Hong-jib, and during this affair he showed pro-Japanese aspect. Also he was involved in the case of the Empress Myengsung's assassination to be exiled to a Jin-do island. In this process he turned more strongly to pro-Japanese. Because of this, he persisted to follow Japan's modernization model of having both industrialization and military power. He also regarded Confucianism and Chinese to be important, found out the common point with Japan, and emphasized on the solidarity with Japan. He organized 'Yimunhoe' with pro-Japan person and ran the results in the newspaper like 'Maeilsinho', 'Josunmoonyeo'. He also took a position of Gyenghakwon Boojehak and Daejehak established by Japan, propagated the theory of social enlightenment, confucianism promotion policy through the Gyeonghakwonjapji.
