전근대 동아시아 敍事學의 지평과 한국 고전소설의 위상

국문 초록

우리 고전소설이 중국소설과 부단한 소통과 교섭을 통해 발전·전개되었음은 잘 알려진 사실이다. 그런 불가분의 관계는 지금까지 주로 모방 또는 영향이라는 관점에서 다루어져왔다. 실제로 <<수이전>>·<<금오신화>>에서 그 점을 확인할 수 있다. 하지만 한․중 고전소설의 영향 관계는 전근대 동아시아 문학 창작의 실천에서 매우 중요하게 간주되어 왔던 用事, 곧 현대적 용어로 바꾸면 패러디의 관점으로 새롭게 이해할 필요가 있다. 우량한 중국소설의 문예적 성취를 때론 적실하게 차용하고, 때론 비판적으로 수용하고, 때론 전복적으로 변용하며 소설사를 개척해온 것이다. 그 점은 이른바 소설의 시대라 할 수 있는 17세기를 넘어서면서 보다 활발하게 이루어지게 되었다. 그런 가운데 명·청대에 창작된 四大奇書를 비롯하여 「西廂記」는 조선후기 소설 작가들에게 있어 하나의 모범적 典範이었고, 그것과 견줄만한 소설을 창작하고자 하는 유력한 動因으로 작용했다. 그리하여 조선후기 최고의 독서 안목을 갖추고 있던 兪晩柱가 “참으로 才情이 특이하고 首尾結搆가 갖추어져 있어 꼭 大作家가 쓴 것과 같은 작품도 많다.”고 증언하고 있듯, 중국소설의 답습이나 아류 수준을 훨씬 벗어날 수 있었다. 朴趾源의 말을 빌면, 法古創新의 경지에 다다랐다 할 만하다. 그럼에도 불구하고 당시 세계 최고 수준을 구가하던 그들과 경쟁하던 소설 작가들의 분투, 그리하여 그에 버금갈 만한 작품을 산출하던 우리 고전소설계의 실천은 그에 값하는 정당한 독법 및 객관적 평가의 시각을 확보하지 못했다. 여기에서는 그런 점을 반성적으로 되짚어가면서 새로운 시각으로 한·중 고전소설의 소통과 교섭을 읽어야 할 필요성을 제기하였다.

영문 초록

It is well known that Korean classic novels are developed and flourished through incessant communication with Chinese classic novels. This close connection is mostly examined in terms of imitation and influence until now. Suijeon and Keumosinhwa are the certain evidence of it. However the influential relationship between Korean and Chinese classic novels should be read from a new perspective, which is in modern term, parody that has been considered significantly in the practice of premodern Asian creation of literature. Korean novels had developed through the history of novels by appropriating adequately the literary achievement of outstanding Chinese novels, by embracing critically and transforming subversively. The development was carried out actively after the seventeenth century, the so-called, the Age of Novels. Meanwhile Seosanggi including four great classical novels in the Ming, Qing period was single most ideal example among late Joseon writers and worked as influential driving force for Joseon writers to create comparable novels. Thus Yu Man-ju who had the most excellent discerning eye on reading in late Joseon period testified, "Truly it has unique wit and is consistent. There are many great novels like the ones written by masters." These novels broke free from following the old path of imitating Chinese novels. Park Ji-Won quoted that Korean novels emulated Chinese novels and furthermore created new level of novels. Nevertheless the practice of Korean classic novelists and their efforts to compete against world best Chinese novelists at the time and to produce comparable works did not receive objective and justified evaluation. This article proposes the necessity to read the communication and connection of Korean and Chinese novels from a new viewpoint reflecting these research.
