국문 초록

한말일제시기 정통 유학자들은 ‘근대’라는 시대의 영향력에 견인되어 서구 문명과 일부 소통하면서도 여전히 儒道의 본령으로써 망국의 현실을 타개하고자 하였다. 그 중 晦峰河謙鎭의 國性論(1921)은 동양과 서구 문명을 비교하고 엄격한 자기반성을 거쳐, 결국 민족 보존의 방안을 유학의 ‘禮義’로 규정짓고 있다는 점에서 매우 주목되는 논설이다. 회봉은 국민 정신의 총화로서의 ‘國性’을 강조했는데, 그가 언급한 조선의 국성은 ‘禮義’이다. 禮義는 우리만의 장점이며, 그것이야 말로 세계의 평화를 선도할 수 있는 관건이다. 동시대 深齋曺兢燮의 非共和論(1912)이 聖君에 의존하는 데 반해, 국성론 은 국민 전체의 도덕성을 강조했다는 측면에서 보다 근대적이다. 또한 식민지 근대의 물리적 억압과 서구 문명의 위력을 오래 겪었으면서도, 여전히 정통 유학의 외연을 넓혀 서구 문명을 창조적으로 수용하고 유학의 장점으로 국가를 재생시키고자 했다는 점이 국성론 의 참다운 가치이자 시대적 의미이다.

영문 초록

In the period between the late of the Korean Empire and Japanese colonial rule, orthodox Confucian scholars accepted some parts of Western civilization, but still relied on Confucianism to overcome the situation of national collapse. Especially, it is notable that in his National Characteristics Theory (1921), Hoibong Ha Gyeom Jin compared Eastern and Western civilization and, through a thorough self-reflection, finally defined Confucianism-based ‘manners' as the way of national preservation. He emphasized that ‘national characteristics' represented the national spirit as a whole. Here, the key of the characteristics was ‘manners' as mentioned above. According to Hoibong, Confucianism-based ‘manners' is not only the very strong point of our nation, but also the key to the world peace. While Non-Republicanism (1912) by Simjae Cho Geung Seop who was a contemporary Confucian scholar put its main focus on ‘the sage king', National Characteristics Theory emphasized the morality of the entire nation. In this sense, the latter was more modern than the former. The reason why National Characteristics Theory is truly valuable and meaningful is because it sought to make newly recognized the strong points of Confucianism and restore his nation in accordance with the very nature of Confucianism, despite the nation was already suffering from the power of Western civilization and Japanese colonial suppression for more than a decade. ritings.
