국문 초록

폴란드인들에게 성탄절은 가족 회합의 자리이며 화해의 자리이기도 하다｡ 폴란드의 민간에서는 성탄절을 새해로 가는 관문이자， 이듬해의 행운을 점치는 주술적인 효력을 가지고 있는 날로 여겼다. 한 해의 끝에서 사람들은 성탄절을 계기로 서로에게 행운을 벌어주면서 묵은해의 슬픔과 근심을 떨쳐버리려 애썼다｡ 폴란드에서 보통 크리스마스 시즌이라고 하면 강림절의 시작인 크리스마스 4주전 일요일부터 주의 공현축일 (The Epiphany, 1 월 6 일)까지를 말하며， 이 시기에 기독교 문화와 관련한 폴란드 특유의 다양한 겨울 세시풍속이 행해지고 있다. 오늘날에는 성탄의 의미가 많이 퇴색되기는 했지만 여전히 가족 행사로서의 중요성은 지켜지고 있으며， 특히 농촌 지역에서는 고대 슬라브의 민간신앙과 관련한 다양한 전통과 풍습을 발견할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Winter festivals and rites, diversified and rich, derive from archaic cult ceremonies of the winter solstice (about December 23rd), beginning this season and marking the beginning of the astronomical year and vegetation cycle and, in folk tradition, the ritual year as well, In time, winter customs and rites became dominated by the religious celebrations of the great festival of Christmas, and more specifically of the whole festive Christmas cycle. The Christmas celebration cycle is opened by Christmas Eve withe its own particular customs and rites. on exhibition, the setting for Christmas Eve and Christmas celebration is a 19th century villager’s cottage interior from the region of Pógorze Rzeszowskie. In polish tradition, it is the home - the family nest - and the banquet table - uniting all the members of he household and the people that are dear to them - that are the scenes of the most significant Christmas customs and rites. The central part of the displayed Christmas Eve table is taken by a wafer(in polish “optatki"). Almost in the whole territory of Poland the Christmas Eve Supper was preceded by the ceremony of breaking the wafer‘ The ceremony derives from early Christian rites of breaking and eating sacrificial bread (called eulogia)， in the Middle Ages exchanged among Church brotherhoods and also shared out among the faithful as a sign of Christian love and peace. Winter festivals in Poland rooted in the age-long cult of the Sun were assimilated into the Christian tradition
