국문 초록

게르쩬에게 있어서 서유럽은 이미 치명적인 질병에 걸려있는 세계이었다. 그는 서유럽의 문화에서 보이는 문제들이 기독교의 영향 때문에 제기되었고 그것은 슬라브적 정신과는 거리가 먼 것이라고 생각했다. 특히, 서유럽 세계에서 나타나는 모든 악이 기독교의 이원론 때문에 야기되었다고 그는 보았다. 게르쩬은 기독교가 끼친 흔적을 폴란드인 미쯔비쯔에게서 발견했고 그것을 메시아니즘이라고 개탄했다. 게르쩬은 그러한 문제들이 ‘자유인’을 계발함으로써 해결될 수 있을 것이라고 믿었다. 따라서 그는 절대적인 도덕성이 모든 것의 기준이어야 한다고 말했다. 게르쩬은 기사계급의 문화와 소매상인의 문화를 엄격하게 구분했다.뚜르게네프와의 논쟁 때에도, 게르쩬은 부르죠아지는 그들 자신의 문화를 갖고 있지 못하고 고상한 문화에 기분 나쁜 습기를 뿌리는 계급이라고 매도했었다. 그러므로 부르죠아지의 문화는 반드시 거부되어야했다. 나아가, 게르쩬은 서구 세계의 지배계급이 제국주의적 야심 때문에 타락하여 분해되고 있다고 보았고, 따라서 서구 세계는 오래 지탱하지 못할 것이라고 믿었다. 폴란드 문제에 대한 게르쩬의 인식에는, 그러므로, 이중적인 측면이 있을 수밖에 없었다. 그는 폴란드의 역사 때문에 야기된 서유럽적인 측면에는 질색했다. 게르쩬에게 그것은 치유되어야 할 측면이었다. 그러나 그는, 폴란드의 분할이 절대주의 시대의 유산이었기에, 폴란드의 역사에 동정을 표했다. 따라서 게르쩬은 폴란드인들과 함께 폴란드의 독립을 위한 선전 활동을 했다. 이것이 러시아의 많은 민족주의자들로부 터 그에 대한 거친 공격을 일으켰다. 러시아 내의 많은 민족주의자들이 거칠게 자신을 공격하고 있었음에도, 그는 폴란드의 독립을 위한 선전활동을 계속하면서 폴란드인들과의 유대를 지속했다. 분명, 그것이 정의이기 때문이었지만 동시에 게르쩬이 러시아 혁명을 위한 동맹자가 필요하다고 생각했기 때문이기도 했을 것이다. 폴란드에 파견되는 러시아의 진압군 장교들을 설득하고자 게르쩬은 ‘이웃의 목에 밧줄을 졸라매면서 자신의 조국에서 자유의 시대를 시작시킬 수 없다.’고 그들에게 말했다. 게르쩬은 폴란드인들 스스로의 동의하에 그들이 슬라브적 세계에 동참하게 될 것이라고 기대했다. 그가 말하는 ‘슬라브 연방’은 미래의 사회주의적 러시아가 주요한 역할을 맡게 될 사회를 의미한다. 그리고 이 슬라브 연방은 당시의 서유럽 세계가 안고 있던 각종 문제들을 극복한 유토피아적 사회를 의미한다. 봉기 당시의 <폴란드 중앙집행위원회>의 위원들과 게르쩬 사이의 담화나 편지가 그들 사이에서 이 부분이 어느 정도 양해되었음을 말해주고 있다. 그는 폴란드인들이 스스로 슬라브적 세계에 동참함으로써 역사의 새로운 흐름에 따를 것이라고 믿었다.

영문 초록

Western Europe, for Herzen, is the world of the fatal disease. He thoughts that the problems of the western culture arose from the effect of Catholicism, and it was alien to the Slavonic genius. Particularly, he thoughts that all evil of the western world was caused by the dualism of Catholicism. He can see the effect of Catholicism in A. Mickiewicz and Herzen deplored as the messianism of Poles. Herzen believed that those problems can be solved by the cultivation for 'the man of liberty'. So, he said that absolute morality must share the fate of everything. Herzen divided into the culture of the knight and the culture of the shopkeeper. He distasted the culture of shopkeeper. While disputing between Herzen and Turgenev, Herzen said that bourgeois had not his own culture and they were the class who cast damp over a noble culture. In addition to it, Herzen was convinced that the western world can't sustain any longer because the ruling class of the West was corrupted and dissolved by imperial ambition. So, Herzen's view for the problem of Poland cannot help being had two faces. Herzen can't endure the western aspects of Poland that was caused by her history. For him, surely, it was the object to be dealt. But he has compassion for her history, because her partition was the heritage of the age of Absolutism. So, Herzen pleaded with Poles for her independence of Poland. This excited the hard attack to him from many nationalists Although he was attacked from many nationalists in Russia, he kept on with his pleading. It seems so because it was not only a rightful cause but also it need to ally with someone for russian revolution. At the uprising of Poland, Herzen would persuaded the offices of Russian detachment to join with him. It is as next; "Drawing a belt he neck of neighbors, one can't make start the liberty age of his nation." Herzen dreamed of Poles' join into Slavonic World with Poles' consent. Surely, it means Slavonic federation which the future socialist Russia will play an important role. Further, these Slavonic federation means the utopian society which has overcome every problem in the contemporary Western Europe. He believed that Poles can go together with the stream of the new history through the join into Slavonic World.
