집시의 기원과 유럽 이주 그리고 루마니아

국문 초록

유럽국가들 중에서 수적으로 볼 때 가장 많은 집시 민족이 거주하고 있는 곳이 루마니아이다. 집시의 정체도 불가 사이하지만 집시의 기원에 관한 문제도 분명하지 않은 것은 마찬가지이다. 루마니아의 집시 전문가인 콘란드 베르코비치(Konrad Bercovici)는 “세상에서 집시의 수 만큼이나 집시의 기원에 대한 이론이 존재한다”고 언급하였다. 집시라 는 용어는 그리스어 아칭가노이(atsínganoi)에서 유래한다. 이 용어는 특히 동유럽에서 많이 통용되었으며, 또한 집시들 자체 내에서가 아닌 외부 사람들이 그들을 부를 때 주로 사용되었기 때문에 ‘종종 경멸적인 의미’를 내포하고 있었다. 따라서 루마니아 집시들은 이 용어보다 산스크리트 기원의 집시 언어인 ‘rrom’이라는 용어를 더 선호하였다. 집시 들은 다양한 국가들에 흩어져 생활했으며, 그곳에서 자신들만의 고유한 문화요소들을 유지하는 동시에 그곳의 여러 가지 문화요소들을 받아들이기도 하였다. 하지만 이러한 역사적인 과정 속에서 집시라는 민족의 정체성은 항상 긍정적인 요소들만으로 나타난 것은 아니었고, 그반대로 부정적인 면이 더욱 더 부각되어 나타나기도 했다. 루마니아 집시들은 19세기 중엽까지 노예로 존재했었기 때문에 이들과 관련한 다양한 상황들은 역사적인 차원에서 이해되어야 한다. 사 실상, 집시들의 노예제도와 관련한 여러 가지 흔적들은 오늘날까지 그들의 사회 구조 속에서 남아있으며, 루마니아 인들과의 관계 그리고 루마니아 정부와의 관계에서도 남아있다고 볼 수 있다. 오늘날 집시 민족의 사회 내에서는 노예제도와 관련한 후유증을 여기저기에서 찾아 볼수 있다. 수세기 동안 노예제도가 지속됨으로 인하여 집시들은 자신들 의 미래에 대한 믿음을 가질 수 없게 되었고, 스스로의 책임으로 행하는 진취적인 정신 또한 약하게 되었으며, 어떤 사건에 대하여 체념하는 운명론적인 삶의 태도를 취하게 되었다. 오늘날에도 집시들은 과거 자신들이 속했던 계급이나 직업에 따라서 차이를 보이고 있으며 지주, 수도원 그리고 영주 등 그들이 어디에 귀속되었느냐에 따라서도 차이를 보이고 있다. 노예제도는 아직도 집시들의 정신세계에 상당부분을 차지하고 있으며 그들의 일상생활에도 영향을 미치고 있다. 오늘날 유럽에서는 과거보다는 덜하지만 아직도 집시들에 대한 인종차별적인 편견을 가지고 있으며, 집시의 정체성은 종종 열등 혹은 하위의 개념으로 이해되고 있다.

영문 초록

Romania when seeing at number, is the nation where the most many gypsies dwell in Europe. The terminology which is a gypsy, originated from Greek 'atsínganoi'. Especially, this terminology passed plentifully from Eastern Europe, also the gypsies is not from the insider but because call from an outsider, often it used ‘contempt meaning’. The Rumania gypsies, therefore, preferred gipsy language of Sanskrit, ‘rrom’ to the ‘atsínganoi’. The gypsies lived scatter to the nations which are various, they maintain the culture elements of their own, at the same time, and they accept various culture elements from it. But in this historical process, the identity of the nation which is gypsy was not always with only affirmative elements, negation was embossed more and more. Because the Romania gypsies existed with the slave until 19 century middle, the various situations which are relates with their must understand from history dimension. Actualness, the various traces which relate with a slavery of the gypsies remain until today inside their social structure, it remain even from relationship with Rumanian and the Romania government. There is a possibility of trying to search for the sequel which relates with slavery from inside the society of the gypsy nation till today. Since the slavery is continued for centuries, the gypsies have not confidence to their future, the progressive spirit which it does with oneself responsibility also it became weakly, and against a what kind of event it gives up and the attitude of the fatalism life which it was taken. Even today gypsies show a difference by the group, that is by rank or the occupation where past them are consequently belonged, and by where it reverted which the landlord, the monastery and the lord of the manor. The slavery hold yet considerably to the spirit world of gypsy and also it affects their daily lives. Today many Romanian have the racial discrimination prejudice against the gypsy, and the gypsy's identity often understood with inferiorly or subordinate concept.
