18세기 후반 북경 천주당을 통한 천주교 서적의 조선 전래와 신앙공동체의 성립

국문 초록

조선후기 지식인의 서양인식과 서학이해의 주요수단은 북경(北京)을 왕래한 사신들이 서양의 선교사들을 만나 그들로부터 선물로 받아가지고 오거나, 선교사들이 저술한 것을 판매하던 유리창(琉璃廠) 서점가 등에서 구입해온 한문서학서(漢文西學書)였다. 서학서의 한 분야인 천주교 서적의 경우에도 17세기 초반부터 재래(齎來)되기 시작했는데, 북경 천주당(天主堂)을 방문하였던 연행사(燕行使)와 그 일행으로 동행한 천주교 신자들에 의해서 1830년대 초반까지 조선으로 유입되었다. 조선왕조에 북경으로부터 천주교 서적을 가져온 대표적인 인물은 한국 천주교회의 창설자 이승훈(李承薰, 蔓川, 베드로, 1756~1801년)이었다. 1783년 11월 북경으로 출발한 동지사 자제군관 이승훈은 1784년 1월 하순 북경의 천주당을 방문하여 천주교리를 학습하고 조선에 복음(福音)을 전하겠다는 결심을 밝히자 그라몽 신부를 비롯한 선교사들이 그의 전교의지(傳敎意志)를 후원하기 위해 그에게 세례(洗禮)를 줌은 물론 천주교의 신앙생활과 교회활동에 필요한 각종 서적들을 골고루 장만하여 대략 수십~수백권에 이르는 천주교 서적을 그에게 선사하였다. 이승훈은 이 책들을 갖고 조선에 귀국하자마자 부족한 교리지식을 보완하고 복음을 전하기 위한 이론적 무장을 갖추기 위해서 천주교 서적을 열독하고 동료들과 그 내용을 토론하는 데 힘썼다. 그리하여 이때 가져온 복음해설서(福音解說書), 기도서(祈禱書), 호교론적(護敎論的) 교리서(敎理書), 성인(聖人)들의 전기(傳記), 칠성사(七聖事)와 관련된 서적 등 다양한 천주교 서적들을 토대로 하여 1784년 서울 수표교에서 최초로 집단적인 세례식을 거행하여 가톨릭 신앙공동체를 창설한 후부터 1794년경까지 약 10년 동안 열심히 교회활동을 수행함으로써 한국 천주교회를 창설한 공로자가 되었다. 이승훈은 교회 안팎에서 그가 다량다종(多量多種)의 천주교 서적을 본격적으로 조선에 가져온 최초이자 대표적인 인물로 널리 알려졌는데, 이 때문에 그는 1801년 천주교 신앙으로 인한 죽음을 당하게 되었다.

영문 초록

It was the Western books written in Chinese characters, introduced from the European Catholic missionaries into diplomatic delegation of Joseon dynasty as a present or as a being purchased in the street of bookshops Yoorichang in Beijing China that made the Korean intellectuals see and understand the western studies in the late of Choseon dynasty. From the beginning of 17th century the Catholic books as a sort of Western books had been transmitted to Choseon dynasty from Beijing by the diplomatic delegation and his following catholics visited to Catholic Church, till the early in the 1830s. Lee Seung-hoon(1756~1801) is the most famous person who introduced the Catholic books from Beijing to Choseon dynasty and founded Catholic Church in Korea. His christian name was Peter, and another name Man-cheon. Lee Seung-hoon, the son of the third ambassador of the diplomatic delegation followed his father on November in 1783, and visited Catholic church in Beijing on January in 1784. And there he studied catholic dogma and expressed his decision of preaching the gospel, then he was baptised by Fr. Grammont and received various plenty book for catholic religious life and christian activities, amounting from dozens to hundreds, with the object of encouraging and supporting him. As soon as returning to his country, he made an effort to read carefully and to discuss with his fellows in order to arming the theoretical basis for preaching the gospel. By having the first baptizing ceremony at Soopyo-gyo in Seoul in 1784, he has founded the Catholic community, from that time to 1794, during 10 years, he did his duty for church, thereby he became the founding contributor of Korean Catholic church. He accomplished his duty excellently due to such books as Gospel commentary, player book, catechism for protecting church, biography of saints, the books for seven Sacraments, etc., which were introduced to Choseon dynasty from Beijing by him. Lee Seung-hoon was the first and representative person who has been famouse for introducing plenty and diverse catholic books in earnest, thereby he died a martyr in 1801.
